About David Samuel Stern

David Samuel Stern was born in 1982 in Highland Park, a suburban city in Lake County (IL, USA). He got an MFA at the Washington University in 2006 and now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

As a child, he didn’t think about art much until taking a darkroom-photography course during a high-school summer break. From that moment on, thanks to that summer course and once learned the medium, David began to take art seriously.

Work

His latest work, Woven Portraits 2020, is the result of photographic prints on translucent vellum. David physically cut and weaved together by hand two portraits of the same person. He then merges them into one another to create an exciting pattern and incredible texture. Finally, carefully cuts them apart. The attempt he aims at by doing this is to give portraits a sort of abstraction to allow the subjects to hide within themselves. He indeed states on his website: “In hiding something we reveal others.” Also, to David, the process of making something is as necessary as the thing itself.

Technique

Each piece of the Woven Portrait series is a physically unique and one-of-a-kind portrait. The photographs, all taken in a lighting studio and printed on vellum, are all large-scale prints.

The palette of light and the delicate contrasts maximize the effect of overlapping two sides of a human being. By doing this, David generates two different emotions. The portraits are caught in one mid-motion, a mix of two attempts of an action.

David transforms the photographic prints by creating a painterly atmosphere. His method is simple yet powerful. However, the abstraction of his work hides elements and details of the portraits as well.

David features in several creative international magazines and has already exhibited both in various solo and group shows.

About Ronald Zambrano

Ronald Zambrano’s works focus investigates the discipline of painting through color. Almost all his work develops through layers and natural pigments. Ronald covers parts of the canvas while leaving other areas only partially empty. Abstract art allows him to explore painting with freedom, to live the journey as an experience with its different stages to reach the recognition of the identity.

The harmony he reaches is honest and vibrant, an explicit conversation about himself through pigments and forms. The chosen colors and shapes resemble physical nature, such as plants and water, or genuine feelings like anger and joy. Although each area of his canvas may also stand alone, it is undeniable how every element in his paintings functions as a whole.

We had an exclusive interview with Ronald. Get comfy and enjoy reading it!

Ronald Zambrano

Let’s start from the basics. What’s your name, and where have you grown up?

My name is Ronald Zambrano. I was born in San Cristobal, Venezuela, a city in the Venezuelan Andes. I lived there for the first stage of my life, where I studied art and language, and literature. Later I came to Europe to spend a year in Vienna, working as an assistant to an artist called Karl Goldammer. Finally, I settled in Madrid, where I got a master’s degree in criticism and practice of contemporary art.

When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

As a child, I painted the walls of my house. Back then, I wasn’t aware of art, so I started to be mindful of color, and slowly something awoke in me. It was when my mother gave me a box full of colored pencils that I began spending hours drawing and painting.

Please briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art.

I work with color, and I create paintings from pure pigments. I also use sprays, acrylics, and oils.

What is the main feature that has changed in your work or practice?

I used to work more with figurative art, but development and artistic research led me to abstraction. Even if I never rejected figurative art, I prioritized looking for the prominence of color.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I like different artists, Peter Zimmerman, Cruz Diez, Joseph Beuys, and some classics like Turner and TiZIANO. I also like music and literature.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I want people to feel a relationship between print and memory. These are two of the points I mainly work on, and I like the viewer to catch this when looking at my piece immediately.

Ronald Zambrano Ronald Zambrano

Spread the word! Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

I am currently painting a lot while also working on objects and installations to strengthen contacts with galleries and art spaces.

Hand lettering and abstract painting

Otto holds multiple accounts for his art practice, ranging from prints to objects to murals and letterforms. He calls a project of much of his hand lettering work “Wallphabets,” a hybrid of alphabets written directly onto walls. For him, it’s about the craft itself, the shape of the letters, and transferring them analogously to the wall, so he practices his skills with the brush to draw these beautiful writings by hand.

Baum is fascinated by simple forms, the feel, and the structure of materials such as wood and paper. He is interested in how unpredictable analog printing techniques such as linocuts or monotypes can be.

His CV sees collaborations with the famous architect Cazú Zegers and the real estate project Varanda 7, together with the renowned architect Emilio Arancibia. In 2016 and 2018, he participated in contemporary art research residencies in Lima and Sao Paulo, respectively.

We recently had a fascinating interview with Tola, through which he deepened his art and creative practice.

Hello Tola, nice to have you here. Let’s start from the basics. What’s your name, and where have you grown up?

Hello, my full name is Tola Navarro. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela. I now live in Santiago, Chile.

How did you understand you would have become an artist?

I have indeed been a painter all my life. Since I can remember, I have wanted to paint and create new work. Although I have wanted to become an artist since school, it was only around 2015 that I decided to become a full-time one.

Please briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art.

My art mainly consists of spray paint on paper. It is a technique that I define as ‘origami inspired’ as it combines paper foldings with geometric and abstract work. The desire to create beautiful new work drives me to create never seen works that inspire people.

Tola Navarro artist Tola Navarro artist Tola Navarro Tola Navarro

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

Practice, experimentation, and a lot of work make me grow. I wake up early every day and go to my workshop to work on new pieces.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I love what Felipe Pantone is doing. CNC machining and the incredible potential of 3d printing.

Finally, how would you like people to engage with your work?

I want them to genuinely look at what it is, spray on paper.

My work doesn’t reflect anything outside of its inner potential, it is what it is.

Each piece is an experience of pure visual pleasure and exploration. It embraces you with itself in its spaces of color, light, and shadows.

About Pantónio

Pantonio, born António Correia, in 1975 in the Azores, Portugal, is a celebrated street artist known for his mesmerizing murals that capture the fluidity and dynamism of the natural world. With a distinguishable style characterized by flowing forms, Pantònio’s work often features swarms of animals—fish, birds, and other creatures—interwoven in ways that evoke movement and harmony within urban environments.

Pantonio Pantonio

Pantónio’s Artistic Journey

Pantonio’s artistic journey began in his youth, but he gained significant recognition after moving to Lisbon, where he became an influential figure in the city’s vibrant street art scene. His murals, often colossal in scale, breathe life into urban landscapes, transforming blank walls into canvases that celebrate biodiversity. Each piece serves not only as an artistic expression but also as a commentary on the relationship between nature and urbanization.

Pantonio

Lisbon’s Influence

Pantónio’s imagery is also deeply influenced by the culture of Lisbon and the Tagus River. His works frequently depict elements associated with the river and its inhabitants, including sardines, cod, octopus, mermaids, ropes, and boats. This suggests a strong connection to the local environment and its traditional imagery. Furthermore, he draws inspiration from his surroundings, such as creating a mural inspired by a tree in a park. His artistic style, described as having a “very personal visual vocabulary and a strong graphic style with remarkable amplitude,” further suggests that his inspiration comes from a combination of his personal experiences and the vibrant cultural landscape of Lisbon.

Pantónio’s Technique and Aesthetics

The artist’s unique technique involves layering vibrant colors and dynamic shapes, creating a sense of depth and movement. This approach allows viewers to experience a visual narrative that captures the essence of life’s fluidity. Pantonio often draws inspiration from the rich natural surroundings of his native Azores, incorporating elements that reflect the islands’ biodiversity and ecosystems.

Pantonio’s work has transcended borders, with murals found in various countries, reflecting a global appreciation for his artistry. He has participated in numerous international street art festivals and exhibitions, further establishing his reputation as a leading figure in the contemporary street art movement.

His contributions extend beyond mere aesthetics; Pantonio aims to raise awareness about environmental issues through his art. By portraying the beauty and intricacy of animal life, he invites audiences to reflect on the importance of biodiversity and the impact of urban development on natural habitats.

Pantonio’s murals are often characterized by a blend of realism and abstraction. This technique not only showcases his technical skills but also creates a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork. The swirling patterns and vibrant colors pull the audience into a world where nature and urban life coexist, encouraging a deeper connection to the environment.

His works are not only visually stunning but also serve as poignant reminders of the beauty of nature and the need to protect it amidst the challenges of urbanization.

About Olatunji Benjamin

Olatunji Benjamin is a Nigerian contemporary painter and a mixed media Artist. He was trained as a painter at the School of Art at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos before he started his explorative research. He earned the General Art’s national diploma and later specialized in painting which gained him a Higher National Diploma. While in school, he had the opportunity to meet great artists engaging in collaborative projects.

His work experience with other artists acquired him more exposure.

However, before 2010, when Olatunji discovered himself as an artist, he was an apprentice under different masters most of who were realists. He started as an impressionist, and realist, and now is an abstract expressionist.

He explores the pictorial potential of pure abstraction. He uses a visual language of shape, form, color, and line to create a composition that exists with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.

Hue&Eye interviewed him to discover more about what drove Olatunji to make art.

Let’s start from the basics. What’s your name and where have you grown up?

My name is Olatunji Benjamin, I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, Africa.

When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I understood I would be an artist at the age of ten as I could draw on any surface with any material.

May you briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

My artwork’s technique is primarily underpainting. I allow the first layer of the background color to reflect in the final painting.

The drive for making art comes from the inner struggles of reality. Creating art is a spiritual enlightenment for me, it speaks about my subconsciousness which I believe can also liberate others who see my art.

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

The main feature that has changed in my works is moving from realism to abstract expressionism, figurative abstract, and now figurative surrealism.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I’m inspired by Kehinde Wiley, and above visual art, music keeps me motivated. I love playing the piano.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I would like people to engage with my work by sharing via different platforms, or by having a sense of ownership.

About Vicky Von Knorring

Vicky Von Knorring’s educational background is as diverse as her artistic expression. She studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts, delved into filmmaking at the Tisch School of Art (New York University), and earned a degree in architecture from Kingston University, London. At 18, Vicky embarked on a life-changing journey on the Trans-Siberian train to China. Her travels led her into the mountainous regions around Tibet, where she immersed herself in the tranquility of Buddhist monasteries, practicing yoga and meditation.

Raised in an environment steeped in art and culture, Vicky Von Knorring was exposed to exhibitions and museums from an early age. Her parents’ social circle included numerous artists and cultural influencers, fostering a rich creative atmosphere. Whether playing Robin Hood, acting in theater, or skiing, Vicky’s childhood was a blend of artistic immersion and active exploration.

Vicky’s heritage is a symbiosis of two distinct lineages. Her mother’s family, reminiscent of Finnish forest fairies, resonates with her deeply, while her father’s lineage traces back to the mythical Count Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt, adding a touch of historical intrigue to her identity.

Vicky Von Knorring’s Career background

After her studies, Vicky Von Knorring gained invaluable experience working in architecture offices in Tokyo and Switzerland. However, her passion for the audiovisual arts soon took over, leading her to direct music videos for industry giants such as Universal, Sony BMG, and Warner in Helsinki. This phase of her career was a prelude to her eventual move to the South of France, where she dedicated more time to her art.

Vicky’s work is a profound exploration of spiritualism in a cosmopolitan world, especially pertinent during these turbulent times marked by climate change and geopolitical tensions. Her art provides a sense of solace and introspection, resonating deeply with young people facing uncertainty.

The ‘Saint’, ‘Dopamine’ and ‘Genesis’ collections

A serendipitous meeting with her songwriter husband, Dominic Bugatti, at a conference in Cannes marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Relocating to the French Pyrenees, a region renowned for its mystical aura and miraculous sightings, particularly in Lourdes, Vicky drew deep inspiration from her surroundings.

This inspiration manifests powerfully in her ‘SAINT’ collection, where figures are depicted as pure energy or ‘aura,’ capturing the spiritual essence and making it universal. Her ‘DOPAMINE’ collection explores themes of transience and playfulness, akin to atoms in perpetual division. Her third collection, ‘GENESIS’, features abstract shapes in constant motion, creating a sense of flux. All three collections are characterized by evocative dark backgrounds embellished with diamond dust.

What is Abstract Art?

Abstract art painting means to depict a subject in a non-realistic way. When we describe something that we may not sense through touch, taste, sight, hearing, or smell, we use abstract adjectives.

As a definition, abstract art is the 20th-century movement characterized by the reduction of natural appearances into simplified forms; for example, constructing art based on geometric shapes or intuitive gestures. Abstract art does not depict a person, place, or thing in the natural world or does not make any visual references. What is very important to mention when defining abstract art is that abstract artists do not deal with figurative interpretation. Stylistically, abstract art included the movements of Surrealism, DadaismCubism, and Fauvism.

Famous Abstract Artists

Famous artists belonging to these art movements are, to mention a few, Vasily Kandinsky (1866–1944), Piet Mondrian (1872–1944), and Kazimir Malevich (1878–1935), Mark Rothko (1903-1966) and Jackson Pollock (1912–1956).

The Basics of Abstract Art

Abstract art usually has its basics in something outside reality. It isn’t synonymous with chaotic design. One may confuse it with the therapeutical “mush some paint on the canvas and see what happens.” Instead, abstract art hides profound meanings and harmonic values. Try these tricks to ease your process to avoid messing around at the beginning.

Always start with a concept.

It will not only direct your work, but it will also help you out making the right harmonious decisions while working. Abstract art is indeed a lot about harmony.

Focus on composition.

As said above, never forget that your composition needs harmonious values. Whether splashing color or contouring a shape, the final piece will have straightforward storytelling with a structure in mind.

Try experimenting in the making.

As Jackson Pollock teaches, the creative process may also start without a precise idea. Indeed, being surprised may be the core of the process itself. With structure and concept in mind, free yourself to tools, techniques, and whatever support you find on your way. There are no hard or fast rules except the ones you make for yourself. The only limitation is consistency and courage. Experienced artists are confident and produce every mark with intention. Paint splatters may look random, but they’re put there for a reason.
