Ronald Zambrano’s works focus investigates the discipline of painting through color. Almost all his work develops through layers and natural pigments. Ronald covers parts of the canvas while leaving other areas only partially empty. Abstract art allows him to explore painting with freedom, to live the journey as an experience with its different stages to reach the recognition of the identity.

The harmony he reaches is honest and vibrant, an explicit conversation about himself through pigments and forms. The chosen colors and shapes resemble physical nature, such as plants and water, or genuine feelings like anger and joy. Although each area of his canvas may also stand alone, it is undeniable how every element in his paintings functions as a whole.

We had an exclusive interview with Ronald. Get comfy and enjoy reading it!

Let’s start from the basics. What’s your name, and where have you grown up?

My name is Ronald Zambrano. I was born in San Cristobal, Venezuela, a city in the Venezuelan Andes. I lived there for the first stage of my life, where I studied art and language, and literature. Later I came to Europe to spend a year in Vienna, working as an assistant to an artist called Karl Goldammer. Finally, I settled in Madrid, where I got a master’s degree in criticism and practice of contemporary art.

When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

As a child, I painted the walls of my house. Back then, I wasn’t aware of art, so I started to be mindful of color, and slowly something awoke in me. It was when my mother gave me a box full of colored pencils that I began spending hours drawing and painting.

Please briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art.

I work with color, and I create paintings from pure pigments. I also use sprays, acrylics, and oils.

What is the main feature that has changed in your work or practice?

I used to work more with figurative art, but development and artistic research led me to abstraction. Even if I never rejected figurative art, I prioritized looking for the prominence of color.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I like different artists, Peter Zimmerman, Cruz Diez, Joseph Beuys, and some classics like Turner and TiZIANO. I also like music and literature.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I want people to feel a relationship between print and memory. These are two of the points I mainly work on, and I like the viewer to catch this when looking at my piece immediately.

Tola Navarro (b.1984) lives in Caracas, Venezuela. He is a sculptor’s grandson and a Chilean poet’s son. Tola holds a degree in Architecture with a minor in Art History from the Universidad del Desarrollo. 

His CV sees collaborations with the famous architect Cazú Zegers and the real estate project Varanda 7, together with the renowned architect Emilio Arancibia. In 2016 and 2018, he participated in contemporary art research residencies in Lima and Sao Paulo, respectively. 

Tola’s exhibitions already include ones at Galería Arte Espacio, ArtStgo, and Faxxi. In 2019 he was invited to a residency in Contemporary Art in Sao Paulo, and in 2020, after his father passed away, he decided to build a permanent workshop in Batuco, Chile.

We recently had a fascinating interview with Tola, through which he deepened his art and creative practice. 

Hello Tola, nice to have you here. Let’s start from the basics. What’s your name, and where have you grown up?

Hello, my full name is Tola Navarro. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela. I now live in Santiago, Chile.

How did you understand you would have become an artist?

I have indeed been a painter all my life. Since I can remember, I have wanted to paint and create new work. Although I have wanted to become an artist since school, it was only around 2015 that I decided to become a full-time one.

Please briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art.

My art mainly consists of spray paint on paper. It is a technique that I define as ‘origami inspired’ as it combines paper foldings with geometric and abstract work. The desire to create beautiful new work drives me to create never seen works that inspire people.

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

Practice, experimentation, and a lot of work make me grow. I wake up early every day and go to my workshop to work on new pieces.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I love what Felipe Pantone is doing. CNC machining and the incredible potential of 3d printing.

Finally, how would you like people to engage with your work?

I want them to genuinely look at what it is, spray on paper. 

My work doesn’t reflect anything outside of its inner potential, it is what it is.

Each piece is an experience of pure visual pleasure and exploration. It embraces you with itself in its spaces of color, light, and shadows.

Olatunji Benjamin is a Nigerian contemporary painter and a mixed media Artist. He was trained as a painter at the School of Art at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos before he started his explorative research. He earned the General Art’s national diploma and later specialized in painting which gained him a Higher National Diploma. While in school, he had the opportunity to meet great artists engaging in collaborative projects.

His work experience with other artists acquired him more exposure.

However, before 2010, when Olatunji discovered himself as an artist, he was an apprentice under different masters most of who were realists. He started as an impressionist, and realist, and now is an abstract expressionist.

He explores the pictorial potential of pure abstraction. He uses a visual language of shape, form, color, and line to create a composition that exists with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.

Hue&Eye interviewed him to discover more about what drove Olatunji to make art.

Let’s start from the basics. What’s your name and where have you grown up?

My name is Olatunji Benjamin, I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, Africa.

When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I understood I would be an artist at the age of ten as I could draw on any surface with any material.

May you briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

My artwork’s technique is primarily underpainting. I allow the first layer of the background color to reflect in the final painting.

The drive for making art comes from the inner struggles of reality. Creating art is a spiritual enlightenment for me, it speaks about my subconsciousness which I believe can also liberate others who see my art.

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

The main feature that has changed in my works is moving from realism to abstract expressionism, figurative abstract, and now figurative surrealism.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I’m inspired by Kehinde Wiley, and above visual art, music keeps me motivated. I love playing the piano.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I would like people to engage with my work by sharing via different platforms, or by having a sense of ownership.

Agostino Iacurci (b.1986) is a contemporary visual artist working with painting, murals, sculpture, drawings, and then welcoming space through installations. Originally from Foggia (southern Italy), Agostino’s art practice began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and then moved to various places, the last being Berlin for six years. Until 2022 he was in New York for a residency at ISCP (International Studio & Curatorial Program) in Brooklyn. 

Iacurci has worked extensively in the public art context making large murals, alternating them with more traditional studio practice, experimenting with various mediums, and collaborating with other professionals, artisans, and crafters.

Often driven by a site-specific attitude, Iacurci manages heterogeneous materials, constantly manipulating them. By doing this, he generates images in which he willingly recounts cultural history, emotional memories, literary references, and tales.

Gail Sarashon, originally from Brooklyn, New York, made a name for herself as a talented textile designer, fashion designer, and dinnerware designer. She dedicated her free time to drawing and painting, saving every design in a special notebook. Following her graduation with a B.A. in Fine Arts from Brooklyn College, Gail continued her education at the Fashion Institute of Technology, earning an A.A.S. degree in both textile and fashion design. This equipped her with the necessary skills to embark on a successful career in the garment industry. Gail gained valuable experience in the garment industry over many years before taking a new entrepreneurial step. She launched a website to showcase and sell her uniquely designed dinnerware creations. After a fulfilling career in the garment and dinnerware industry, she recently decided to renew her passion for drawing and painting. Her artwork is characterized by a whimsical, vibrant, and contemporary style, drawing inspiration from her travels, surroundings, and the beauty of nature.

When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

Ever since I was in elementary school.

May you briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

My technique is painting many layers using paintbrushes and scraping tools. To me, art expresses my mood at the time of creation. I find the most joy in crafting colorful abstract shapes that captivate the viewer’s attention. I hope to bring happiness and sophistication to someone’s home.

What is the main feature that throughout the years has changed in your works or practice?

I went from designing textiles to fashion design to fine arts.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I appreciate many artists from classic, such as Renoir to modern, like Rothko.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I wish my work to bring happiness to my viewers.

Andrew Lincoln Nelson, grown up in Laramie WY, is an artist that currently works in Tucson, Arizona, USA.

Biology, maths and artificial intelligence are his main source of inspiration, while his tool are surrealistic graphite drawings and mixed-media abstracts. His drawings are a representation of machine creatures with a background that may often resemble Arizona’s landscapes. 

He has exhibited at the University of Arizona and the Arts Speak event at the Tucson Museum of Art. His work has been used in popular/scientific presentations, including a recent TED talk, written up in The NAP Snapshot, and Artifact, the online arts journal of the University of the Arts London.

Hello Andrew. When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I have done artwork since childhood. I pursued fine art drawing for the last ten years. Before that I was working in academic research.

Can you briefly tell us about your technique and what drives you to make art?

I use traditional graphite pencil drawing techniques but the subjects of my drawings are semi-surrealistic versions of life that might exist in the future or on exp-planets. I use only hand techniques and employ only geometric and analogue calculations for composition and study. The work includes many references to the research fields of artificial life, Zeno-biology and evolutionary computation. In addition, I include an element of landscape rendering with detail level near that of the central focus of each work.

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

Throughout the years the detail and rendering of my work has moved toward realism, with a move away from schematic line-based drawings and toward light/shadow definition, planar projection, consistent field-of-view and space-filling techniques.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

Although it seems insular, I avoid studying past or contemporary art and find that I am better able to see into other worlds if I can clear my mind of current and passed ideas. This bares a slight resemblance to the concept of the beginners mind, but ultimately stems from my own inability to tell the difference between what I am seeing through my own eyes, and what I am seeing through the eyes of others. That said though… Escher, Hieronymus Bosch, H R Giger, Roger Dean were all childhood favorites.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I like people to view my work without many preconceptions about the subject matter. The work is meant to convey a visceral impression of looking at something that is not familiar and that isn’t part of the human sphere. The feeling or sense of complexity is something like a mental flavor or an emotional experience, and my work is intended to draw that out. Also, it is my intent that the viewer speculate about the origins and purpose of the creatures in my drawings, and perhaps to take note of the austere nearly lifeless environments they inhabit. There are many concepts from biology, evolutionary theory, Zeno-biology and post-technological life embedded in my work, but I do not intend the viewers to be overtly aware of these influences per se.

1. Felipe Pantone

Felipe Pantone is an Argentinian artist, born in Buenos Aires. When he was young, he moved to Spain to discover graffiti and, later, experiment with it. He obtained an Art diploma in Valencia, where he still has his studio.

An eternal wanderer, his mural paintings are visible in Tokyo, London, Osaka, Paris and many other cities.

Felipe Pantone draws inspiration from several artists like José María Yturralde, Frédéric Platéus, Herb Lubalin, Sozyone Gonzalez, Steven Powers, not to mention Demsky.

His work combines typography and abstraction with extremely modern aesthetics. Strictly avant garde, his unique style re-invents graffiti art with futuristic and kinetic art. He uses a palette of colors with geometric pattern of optical art, by defying movement and perspective. A true chameleon, he explores text, neon and metallic colors.

Felipe Pantone puts together a new visual language, on the borders of the digital era, technology and society.

2. Maude Ovize

Born in 1980, Maude Ovize is a French artist, living and working in Lyon.

Graduated from the fine arts of Saint Etienne, she moved to Lyon in 2005 and works since the question of the motif in painting. She is part of a collective of artists working in a workshop on the slopes of the Red Cross, the Mecca of the Lyon creation.

In her journey around the question of the motif, Maude Ovize is currently working on a series devoted to water which she explores all aspects: sensation, matter, light, color.

3. Kaws

Brian Donnelly, aka Kaws, is an American artist and designer born in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. As a street artist, painter, illustrator, sculptor, publisher, his work touches on everything that surrounds the world of Pop Art.

After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Art in Illustration in 1996 from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Kaws briefly worked for Disney as a freelance animator. Today he lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Kaws began his career in the 1990s with street interventions. He superimposed his own work onto billboards, bus stops, and phone booth advertisements. As he became more well-known, his ads were taken down and collected by people. He created or reused well-known characters from comics and cartoons in his offbeat imagery. Subjects like the Michelin Man, the Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Sponge Bob, are all common figures rooted in the collective imagination that allows the artist to adopt a universal language. Kaws’s goal is to make art accessible to all. He signs all his creations with a very particular trademark: figures with crossed-out eyes, making his style easily recognizable.

After becoming famous, Kaws appropriated different techniques and extended his artistic production to the world of sculpture and painting on canvas. The passage from 2D to 3D works is motivated by his search for greater mastery of space and reality. His sculptures can reach monumental dimensions. Some of his giant characters have been exposed in front of museums, and they never fail to draw the attention of passers-by.

Kaws’s work is influenced by Pop Art, but also by artists such as Gerhard Richter, Claes Oldenburg, or Chuck Close.

4. Thandiwe Muriu

Passionate about photography since the age of 14, Thandiwe Muriu grew up in Kenya in a family marked by art, surrounded by a sister who is a stylist and a second one, a virtuoso pianist. She refined her photographic practice during her teenage years, influenced by Vogue magazine and the aesthetic canons in the front page of this women’s publication. She took one of her sisters as a model and tried to portrait her with complete freedom.

It is the time of the rise of social networks, her photographs meet a great success and lead her to sign her first commission as a young talent.

After graduation, passionate about the 8th art, she dedicates herself definitively to fashion photography and at the age of 23, signs her first contract for an international campaign.

Like her fellow citizens, it is important for her to highlight the natural beauty of women with whom she identifies herself. Her compositions are in keeping with the beauty criteria of a black femininity. Essential models for the African readership at home and from the diaspora too often absent from the front pages of magazines.

Also, she sublimates through her art, black skin and afro hairstyles that deserve to be more than ever valued. Moreover, the photographer reconnects with the glorious past of African empires by using fabric, declined in frank and vivid colors enveloping her subjects.

Determined, passionate, she wishes to spearhead a new generation of committed women entrepreneurs in Kenya through her art, destined to write an inspiring story for many of them. Next challenge? To photograph a cover of Vogue.

She considers the series entitled “Camo” (2015) as a particularly personal achievement marking a decisive stage in her artistic process.

5. Okuda

Okuda (Oscar San Miguel) is a Spanish artist born in 1980 in Santander. He lives and works in Madrid. His work deals with the meaning of life and its contradictions. The artist tries to make us reflect upon the conflits between modernity and humanity’s roots, upon war and violence.

Okuda is a major international artist, selected in the top 100 of the Urban Contemporary Art Guide 2014. He has worked with major brands and travels the world painting on trains, buildings, walls and showing his work in major art galleries.

6. Javier Rey

Javier Rey is a Colombian artist & photographer. His work is in many collective exhibitions, one solo exhibition and several international art fairs such as ArtLima (Peru), Scope Art Fair (Miami) and La Feria Del Millón (Colombia). Rey’s work has also appeared in books such as “Unlocked”, by the Greek collective Atopos, and was chosen as one of the 145 most relevant visual artists and photographers on the web in 2015. His photographs in which he explores the physical structure and the possibilities of sculpture through photography have been featured in several publications in Colombia, USA, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Denmark and other countries.

This series features massive murals created through a unique pressurized spray paint application utilizing gardening hoses and nozzles. Hoxxoh creates the Transfer Murals through a mundane object such as a dustpan. Afterwards paint is manipulated and transferred onto canvas producing abstract designs that serve as the foundation for large-scale murals. This process embraces the imperfections and glitches that arise during the transfer, creating an organic and dynamic interplay between form and space.
