About Yeo Shih Yun

Yeo Shih Yun (b. 1976, Singapore) is a recognized Singaporean artist whose innovative approach to ink painting got her international acclaim. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore in 1998.

Soon Yeo would pursue a Diploma in Communication Design at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts in 2001. Consequently, she gained the Post Baccalaureate Programme in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2002.

Approaching Ink Painting

Yeo’s experimental fusion of traditional ink painting with contemporary mediums, such as new media and performance art, has resulted in dynamic and unpredictable works that challenge conventional notions of the medium. Her unique creative process has earned her recognition, including a 2011 commission by the Singapore Art Museum and the People’s Choice Award for “Conversations with Trees,” which was nominated for Sovereign Asian Art Prize Finalists in 2012 and auctioned by Christie’s Asia. She has also won the UOB Painting of the Year Competition (Distinction in Abstract category) twice, in 1999 and 2007.

Exhibitions and Participations

Yeo has held exhibitions in major cities, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Shanghai, Tokyo, and New York, and has completed numerous commissions, including National Gallery Singapore’s “My Ink-credible Adventure” and her solo exhibition at Esplanade, titled “Chance Encounters,” in 2021.

She participated in the “NFTs + The Ever-Evolving World of Art” Tezos exhibition at Art Basel Hong Kong in May 2022 and the “Digital Baroque” exhibition and auction curated by 4ART NFT+ marketplace and minted on Palm network.

In 2017, Yeo published her first book, “INKPULSE: the art of Yeo Shih Yun,” which chronicles her creative process and highlights her pursuit of new depths and perspectives within and beyond Abstract Expressionism. Additionally, Yeo is the Founder of “INSTINC,” an independent art space in Singapore.

Yeo’s innovative approach to ink art has significantly impacted the development of the medium both in Singapore and internationally.

We had an exclusive interview with her!

Hello Yeo! When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

Growing up, my mum encouraged me to do whatever interested me. By age 5, I knew art would be essential to my world. Despite my deepest desires of creating art , I did not get to embark on any formal art training until my early twenties – compelled by the practical concerns of life. For my mum’s peace of mind, I had to complete my Business degree course from NUS before I could finally pursue my true passion and enroll myself in LASALLE College of the Arts. At that time, my decision was frowned upon and appeared to puzzle many, but I knew without a doubt that art was the epicenter of my core and calling for life. I could not imagine anything else.

Please briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art.

As an artist, I constantly draw to the rich history and limitless potential of ink painting. My passion for this ancient medium has led me on a journey of experimentation and exploration, fusing traditional techniques with contemporary mediums and unconventional tools.

One of my unique approaches to creating art is my collaboration with unexpected partners. I find inspiration in nature’s organic and unpredictable forms and often work in tandem with trees to create abstract compositions. For this, I also enjoy using non-traditional tools such as remote control cars and toy robots, infusing my works with playful and whimsical energy.

Through this unorthodox approach, I seek to challenge the boundaries of traditional ink painting and explore new depths of creativity. I embrace the fluidity and spontaneity of movement, allowing chance and improvisation to play a role in my works.

My creative process is constant experimentation and exploration, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with ink painting. By embracing the unexpected and collaborating with the world around me, I seek to create truly unique works that reflect my passion for this ancient medium.

Ultimately, my art reflects my deep respect for the rich history and limitless potential of ink painting and my unwavering commitment to exploring its endless possibilities.

What is the main feature that has changed in your work or practice?

My works are becoming more prominent in scale, and also, since 2020, I have used more digital media in my works,

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

Hard to name just one. Some are Robert Motherwell, Toko Shinoda, and Chua Ek Kay. I love traveling!

How would you like people to engage with your work?

Feel the energy from the ‘works.’

Spread the word! Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

Yes, I have an upcoming solo show named SEPTUM that will open from 21-30 APRIL at SUPPER HOUSE in Singapore.

In Latin, SEPTUM means Seven, representing the series of seven paintings and poems. This exhibition aims to break down the perceived separations between art forms, creating an immersive installation.

The paintings, created with industrial sponges, are a result of masterful control of the water-based medium. Poet Euginia Tan crafted
seven abstract text poems in response to each painting, infusing a visual layer to the words. The exhibition will also be documented in a limited edition publication.

SEPTUM is a new chapter for Yeo Shih Yun, pushing her boundaries with her techniques, medium, and expression. The artworks bear her signature bold strokes and strong composition but with fresh colors and newfound
fluidity.

Work Style

It is remarkable how Daria takes inspiration from the Bauhaus movement, the world’s first design school founded by German architect Walter Gropius. The Bauhaus was probably the most influential architectural movement in the 20th century, and Daria’s work is its comprehensive study.

She knows the harmony between shapes and colors, like the combination of pure geometry with a unique execution that defines her work, and her starting point is to explore and understand the entire space rather than focus on details. After doing so, she moves further to the palette choice – a process for which she takes her time to experiment. At last, she will start playing with forms and objects to find the chased harmony and balance.

Her style hints at big names such as Le Corbusier, Matisse, and Charlotte Perriand, though each piece of her work stands out for its modern design.

Daria Zinovatnaya is an international designer who has already worked on commercial and residential projects. For instance, in 2017, she won the Red Dot Award, a renowned international design competition. As for today, she appears in some of the most influential design magazines worldwide, such as AD, Casa Vogue Ell Decor, and Grazia, to mention a few.

About UAU Project

UAUPROJECT is a Polish design studio founded in 2011 and based in Warsaw. Founders Justyna Fałdzińska & Miłosz Dąbrowski are both graduates of the Industrial Design Faculty at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.

Both born in 1983, Dąbrowski is a graduate of industrial design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw while Fałdzińska studied at the Poster Studio at the Faculty of Graphic Arts. The two later had the opportunity to continue their education at the Escola Superior de Artes e Design in Porto.

Their passion for 3D printing brought them to experiment with consumer-oriented home production. Their goal is to show how 3D printing is the best choice for sustainable and accessible design goods.

At UAU, sustainability is key to creating environmental awareness, so each piece recognizes the importance of using biodegradable or highly recyclable materials.

“All our products are designed to be 3D printed from plant-based bioplastics like PLA. They are fully recyclable & compostable in industrial facilities.”, they say.

Highlighting the importance of old craft techniques and everything local and eco-friendly, the two designers dare push the limits of the creative and design processes towards users, encouraging them to get involved.

Products

In 2014 they won the MustHave award at the Łódź Design Festival with the Stołek Królika (Bunny Stool). The stool is adaptable to almost any interior because of its unusual shape. It is neutral, and yet it does not lack character. They used natural materials, as plywood, rubber cord, and the eco-friendly material PLA.

All of their products are customizable, with up to 100 colors. They also manufacture and increase an average of 7 to 14 days to complete an order. As they aim at zero waste and zero emission, their production line will soon be fully sustainable and self-reliant. Another goal is to support local markets by manufacturing products locally.

They also experimented with crockery design, reflecting an attachment for tradition with the dining set of fish-like shapes for the well-known Polish herring.

The Zwierzaki (Animals) series is instead for a young public. Six plush toys compose it by selecting animals living in Poland, such as hares, wolves, or otters. The bag that comes with the toy intends to be the animal’s home.

Main Projects

During the pandemic lockdown, the UAU project experimented with new forms, materials, and a different scale in their studio. It was also when TOTEMS came about – a collection of eight totems created in cooperation with Miranda Makaroff, an interdisciplinary artist – always talking and sharing projects via Instagram DMs.

In 2020, they organized Wyspa RE (RE Island), an exhibition as part of the 2020 Gdynia Design Days, presenting all items custom-made for the show.

About Fotofever

Fotofever Paris welcomes 80 to 100 galleries and publishers from 20 countries each year.

Since 2011, Fotofever has been the destination for discovering and collecting contemporary photography.

Through several events in Paris and Arles, Fotofever offers a springboard to emerging talents worldwide, with an innovative, accessible, and committed approach to the art collection.

Start to collect is an initiative to encourage first-time buyers while introducing new artists to established collectors.

Cécile Schall is an entrepreneur, founder, and director of this international photographic art fair. She aims at fulfilling the wishes of all its audiences under the signs of hope, sincerity, and wonder.

Fotofever 2022 takes place in a magical new location. Bastille Design Center, a former industrial and intimate site host the festival from 10 to 13 February 2022.

The event culminates in a delightfully creative communication campaign by Glory Paris x Adopte, in a nod to the period, the day before Valentine’s Day.

Coup de foudre at Fotofever: an operation in partnership with a dating platform. It will submit a selection of works to the vote of its members, with the winning couple receiving a candlelit dinner in front of the work of love at first sight, at the heart of Fotofever.

The “Start to Collect” concept displays its original vocation: “to promote photography as a work of art, to allow the general public, whether layman or expert, to dare to start or enrich their collection thanks to displayed prices and a selection of works at less than 1000 euros while opening up to young artists and galleries”. This desire to democratize is even more evident in the 2022 edition, which breaks its standard format.

Co-organized with 25 students from Icart, seven galleries will exhibit a free-standing scenography for more excellent proximity.

New modes of the collection, an NFT photo platform, and the first connected photographic frame will show this year.

A tribute to Roger Schall

An interactive, rich, and contemporary program that will also be the setting for a tribute to the photographer Roger Schall on two of the themes dear to him: fashion and Paris.

More than a duty to remember, his granddaughter intends to show that a 20th-century author can integrate into 21st-century technologies.

To enhance the value of this collection of 80,000 negatives, Cécile Schall has launched a call for contributions to digitize it.

THE ATHENA COLLECTION

The Athena Collection, by designer Olivia Lee, is an ode to the Contemporary Woman. The figures of intellect, fierce independence, and discerning standards. The collection references the ancient Greek goddess of knowledge and strategy, mistress of philosophy and craft, and patron of heroes. In our Age of Information, Athena is, by extension, a goddess of technology.

What would Athena make of the world we live in today, our adoration of new media or fetish with the Internet of Things? What new rituals and habits would she sanction?

The collection resists the urge to turn all objects into devices. It is a smart home concept that prioritizes materiality and reimagines analog objects for digital habits through simple twists, design interventions, and multiple functions.

THE STUDIO

OLIVIA LEE is a multidisciplinary studio grounded by an industrial design approach. The practice pivots from product to spatial design, research insights to ideation to create unique experiences. The studio focuses on uncovering new rituals and behaviors, navigating the tension between tradition and future, and bringing brands into unexplored territories through design and narrative.

The studio produced work for a variety of international partners such as AkzoNobel, The Balvenie, Samsung, Mathmos, Bank of Singapore, and the British Council. It has worked on briefs as complex as intergenerational smart homes for public housing, as whimsical as an ice-cream parlor installation for a natural stone company, and as functional as a compact indoor air purifier for the Asian market.

Olivia combines her experiences in London with her Singaporean roots to establish a culturally nuanced design practice in southeast Asia.

Her work has been presented at the Triennale di Milano, Museum fur Kommunikation Berlin, Maison et Object Observatoire de la Maison, Daikanyama T-Site, Mint Shop and featured in Wallpaper*, Icon, Dezeen, Axis, Intramuros, and Disegno.

Kateryna graduated from the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts and held an internship at German Design University “Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle”. She is now master of Industrial Design.
Participant and winner of a lot of European design exhibitions and competitions,  the most important is the Red Dot Design Award 2015.
From 2011 she collaborates with French company Jarre Technologies, related to develop and design video and musical hi-tech product around the name and the experience of famous French musician Jean Michel Jarre.
Today, Kateryna is an internationally established designer based in Kiev which collaborates with European and Asian companies. Has projects in Paris, Hong Kong and Kiev. She recently took part at the Dutch Design Week 2017, in Eindhoven.

COLLECTION OF LAMPS TALISMAN:

Inspired by Himmeli, the traditional geometric pieces of furniture made from rye straw which brings good fortune and decorates houses in Slavic and some Scandinavian countries at Christmas; the Ukrainian designer Kateryna Sokolova has created a whole new range of lighting for Forestier “Talisman”.

Its delicate gilt structure encases tiny diamond lights, and the architectural design of this new collection of pendants brings a touch of jewellery to your home, a sparkling ornament to hang up as you would do with a talisman.
Talisman is available in four styles, Himmeli, Pavuk, Pajak and Puzurs, four lights to hang together as a large, airy cluster or as a single, ultra-fine pendant.

Forestier has a long tradition of commissioning art objects crafted from wire and this new collection reflects its commitment to creating objects of poetry, objects which combine traditional expertise and modern technology, handcrafted but reasonably priced.
Jean-Dominique Leze, at the helm of Forestier since 2012, is a past master of this elegant alchemy, all the while maintaining a deep sense of the ethical and the environmental. (Manufacture: https://www.forestier.fr/)

The work of London’s Zuza Mengham sits at the intersection of industrial design, sculpture, and traditional craft. Chosen by Tom Dixon as a Rising Talent at Maison & Objet, Mengham pushes material boundaries, tweaking familiar forms to create objects that look like something else entirely. Much of her work has a distinctive jewel-like quality.

Mengham’s work explores the join between the recovery of traditional crafts and the creation of her own new methods of making. From giant steel and neon chandeliers housing hanging plants to small geometric glassy sculptures, her work is seated within an atheistic of modernist abstraction.

Refusing labels, she does not describe herself as a designer or as an artist but pinpoints her interest in making ‘spaces’ out of sculptures or making sculptures that hint towards function.

OYSTER + MUSSEL

The Oyster and Mussel sculptural tables, Launched November 2017, are created using Jesmonite and Oyster or Mussel shells respectively. The tables offer a high buff finish revealing the natural shell inclusions and the sliced inner sheen of their iridescent Nacre layers. Each version uses a flecked and marbled casting to accentuate each species natural colors.

Shells have long been used as aggregates for building materials, poultry feed, crop farming acidity balancers, and offer a variety of historical and mythical narratives.

Working with popular London restaurant and fishmongers Sutton & Sons, the sculptural stools use shells kindly donated by the restaurant, creating a recycled and reused material to become the celebrated centerpiece within the work.

Tables are handmade and cast in our London studio, and also employ traditional chair caning techniques with custom made stainless steel frames. They are made to order at a limited edition of 10 each. If you are interested in a commissioning one of the series please feel free to email studio@zuzamengham.com with your enquiry.

AS ABOVE, SO BENEATH

The sculptures refer specifically to materials caught up in definitive crucial moments of catalysis in human history.

The series is comprised of six materials: Copper, Bronze, Iron, Slate, Marble, and Salt. All of these are sourced by means of one kind of excavation or another. They are tied to the earth and the excavation of the earth. They epitomize the accumulated layers of minerals that humans have tapped into, enabling bonds of significance between the landscapes of human history and the geology of the earth itself.

The way in which the resins are manufactured means they are shaped by a mould, cast and excavated again. As resin shrinks, the artist loosens the layers at a certain decisive point and the work has to be knocked back again, re-shaped, gouged out and unearthed, thus mirroring its natural gemstone or mineral counterparts.

LABORATORY PERFUMES

Sculpting Scent was a project which focused on creating a visual representation of Laboratory Perfumes five fragrances: Amber, Gorse, Samphire, Tonka + Atlas.

For her Laboratory Perfumes project at the London Design Festival, Mengham imagined five perfumes as geometric sculptures.
