About the UART MEDIA FEST

The UART MEDIA FEST serves as a wellspring of inspiration and brings joy, particularly during these trying times for Ukraine. The gathering not only bathes life in brilliance but also commemorates the fortitude and indomitable spirit of Ukraine. UART aspires to bolster Ukrainian culture and art amidst these challenging circumstances while engaging the global creative community in this endeavor.

The occasion will be underscored by a charitable initiative during the celebratory concert featuring luminaries from the Ukrainian entertainment sphere. Through this collective effort, they aim to extend support to one of Ukraine’s humanitarian missions.

UART MEDIA FEST is organized by the Gulliver multifunctional complex, which has the largest facade screens in Europe, in cooperation with the international company MEET FUTURE.

Motion designers, 3D visual, and light designers are invited to participate in the international multimedia contest and festival UART MEDIA FEST 2024. Contestants may win grants to develop their projects and have an opportunity to showcase their videos on the largest facade screens in Europe for thousands of festival visitors. The participants may compete in two areas: tech-heavy media art and digital & crypto-art.

Why Participate to the UART MEDIA FEST

The festival will take place on the 5th of October, 2024 in the heart of Kyiv, Ukraine. The works of talented motion designers from all over the world will be showcased to thousands of visitors on the large facade screens. The final screening of the participants’ works on the screens of the Gulliver multifunctional complex will take place on the 5th of October, 2024.

The winners, who will be determined by eminent industry representatives, will receive grants for the further development of their projects. The two winners of the UART MEDIA FEST competition will receive an award of $3000 for the best video and $1000 for NFT and the opportunity to cooperate with MEET FUTURE, i.e. the opportunity to present their work on the largest international media platforms.

Creative studios or individual designers can submit their video works that were created before or create content specifically for the festival. The topic of the second UART MEDIA FEST is “The Universe in Everyone”. For more information about participation and conditions, follow the link.

Gulliver shopping mall always strives to be at the forefront of cultural and social events. We are pleased to organize such an innovative festival, which confirms our status as a leading cultural center of the capital. Together with our partners MEET FUTURE, we continue to write the creative history of the country together, telling about our endless possibilities. Kateryna Zhurakivska, Marketing Director of the Gulliver shopping mall, comments. MEET FUTURE, the international company, the expert and trendsetter in innovative technologies and events, has become the organizational and executive partner of UART MEDIA FEST. The festival will be part of the big birthday celebration of the Gulliver shopping center, which celebrates 11 years in October. The event will combine traditional art and digital installations of the future, united by the topic of artificial intelligence.

UART MEDIA FEST was the first event of this scale in Ukraine, which took place in October 2023 in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Gulliver shopping mall. The festival attracted both national and international audiences: 22 artists from different countries took part in the contest, and their works were seen by 1000 festival visitors offline and 4000 viewers during online translation. All works were distinguished by their unique style and concept, but were united by the theme “The Light in Everyone”. This event became the starting point for a new format of cultural events in the country, combining contemporary art and digital tools of the future.

UART MEDIA FEST has won the 14th edition of the Eventex Awards 2024, the world’s most prestigious marketing award.

6 Tips To Learn How to Price Your Art and Start Selling Your Work

It might be your first attempt as an artist, or you might feel quite fulfilled. In both cases, pricing your work can be highly problematic. We have gathered six quick tips for you to ease the process and stop feeling guilty or humble. After all, who sets the rules to define whether you’re worth 10 or 100? The market does. So grab a pen and follow a rational scheme to start selling your artwork reasonably. And feel free to adjust calculations during your journey!

  1. Research how similar artists price their art

To reasonably price your art, and before making up your idea of how a market works, do your research. Trends change continuously, and one of the best ways to keep on track is to study what works for others. Be realistic by selecting a few artists you consider similar or relevant to your approach and value their accomplishments, experiences, geographic locations, and production rate. You might also think of directly get in touch with them to share opinions!

how to price your art

SPECIAL TIP: SEARCH FOR AN ADVISOR TO HELP YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS

Artists are used to feeling lonely not only in their creative process but also in learning how to expand their network and visibility and to value their artworks. There are platforms dedicated to assisting emerging artists especially. Our suggestion is st-Art, an Amsterdam based community of curators and contributors with the aim of nurturing artists worldwide by providing valid options for developing their skill to divulge their works and sell them to buyers.

Get in touch or register here.

  1. Don’t vary the price for sales in studio or through a gallery

Use an actual or similar rate for selling both in your studio and a gallery. These last won’t appreciate your competition and will ultimately spread the word to other galleries about how you are trying to sell it at a better price by yourself. Its real galleries charge quite a lot, although they guarantee to deliver a professional job.

how to price your art

  1. Balance Your Emotions

Being proud of your work, or underestimating your art, is part of being an artist. It’s easy to get attached, knowing the emotions and effort you usually spend on a piece. A buyer won’t have time to listen to your emotional stories; you should base pricing your work on physical attributes. If you feel close to a specific artwork and think its final price is unfair, consider keeping it off the market and in your private collection.

how to price your art

  1. Stand by your final price

Once you and your advisors have set a final price, stand by it. When you take the time and effort to research and price your work realistically, you will feel confident to state your amount firmly. On their hand, buyers might try hard to negotiate it, but they will even start estimating you as an artist who knows its way. Confidence does wonders.

how to price your art

  1. Remember these formulas:

# 1 – Value your work according to your reputation

The most common formula used by established contemporary artists is very transparent. Multiply the width of the work by the length. Next, multiply the result by a reasonable amount that makes sense for your reputation and credential, and round it to the nearest hundred. Finally, double the cost of your materials and add them to the square inch amount in money.

Do this if you account for the 50% commission rate galleries usually take to sell your work.

Emerging artists should start at affordable rates of 2,5-3,5 € /3-4 $, and higher as they become more established.

If the painting is small – which often means the effort was the same as for a bigger one – you may consider a slightly higher rate and the opposite with a large-scale work.

Example:

  • 18 in x 24 in = 432 sq. Inches
  • 432 x 3,5 € = 1.512 € / Rounded to 1.500 €
  • 100 € (cost of materials) x 2 = 200 €
  • 1.500 € x 200 € = 1.700 €

# 2: Value your work according to your time and effort

This formula covers the time you work and the cost of your materials. It is beneficial for artists that are starting out selling their work. When valuing an hourly rate, compare what similar artists charge for their art. If the result is too high compared to theirs, we suggest you lower it. Double the cost of your materials if you are selling through galleries.

Example:

  • Hourly rate: 20 €
  • Total hours: 15 hours
  • Cost of materials: 100 €
  • 20 € x15 hrs =300 €
  • 300 € +(100 x 2) € = 500 €

  1. Build Authority

Being represented by a gallery and feeling confident with your pricing rate doesn’t exclude the never-ending story of building credibility to grow trust in your buyers.

Indeed, you will have thought about building a clear and appealing online plus social image. Now practice answering some common questions when writing your artist statement.

We share with you some of the main questions we use as a guideline to interview artists at Hue&Eye, to help them build artist credibility and write an engaging story about them:

  • What Does Your Artwork Represent?

About Daria Vasileva

Daria Vasileva, currently living in Washington DC, USA, is a visual artist and fashion illustrator, with a special focus on people and fashion. In her artworks, Daria seeks to transcend the limits of fashion illustration, seamlessly transforming them into charming fashion portraits. Her unique style is influenced by classical art, concentrating on the portrayal of feelings and the beauty of the moment together with the depiction of individuals and their surroundings. Each painting tells a unique story. By utilizing figurative art, fashion, and decoration, Daria explores the intricate relationship between fashion and one’s individuality. She is driven by the desire to showcase fashion through her perspective by capturing the interaction between characters and fashion in everyday life, beyond fashion shows.

Hue&Eye recently interviewed her to discover more about what drove her to make art.

Hello Daria! When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I have loved drawing since my childhood. It is very organic for me. But only a few years ago I decided to combine two of my passions: fashion and art and become a professional artist.

Can you briefly say something about your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

Women and fashion are the two main themes of my artworks. I see myself as an artist whose paintings are elegant fashion illustrations, influenced by traditional art. What inspires me a lot is to show fashion through my perspective. Therefore, I capture characters in everyday situations. My paintings are stories, where either the fashion theme or the depicted character are both important as they support and complement each other.

All my artworks are painted in watercolors. I love this medium because I can achieve incredible transparency, and create a luminous and delicate effect that is unreachable with any other medium.

Daria Vasileva Daria Vasileva Daria Vasileva

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

I think the most important thing was the decision to follow my intuition to create with traditional mediums despite digital art trends and to establish my unique style as an artist.

Daria Vasileva Daria Vasileva Daria Vasileva

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I would say that Henry Matisse and Amedeo Modigliani inspire me a lot with their mastery of color and unique style. Also, artists like Helen Downie and Laura Laine whose artworks and aesthetics I admire a lot. They fill me with a desire to create. And of course fashion, as the art by itself, is to me an endless source of inspiration and reflection.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I hope for my art to be perceived as a visual retreat to beauty and to evoke feelings of joy, happiness, and delight in my audience.

Spread the word! Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

Recently I participated in art awards and competitions, where my works have received recognition. One was especially important to me since it is a well well-known award among fashion illustrators. For now, I am focused on the creative process and new ideas.

About Kathryn MacNaughton

Kathryn MacNaughton was born in 1985 in Toronto, Canada. She graduated from Ontario College of Art and Design in 2007 and today lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal.

Kathryn incorporates figurative painting with a combination of abstract expressionism, and geometric abstraction into one poetical view. All this, together with the still life, has been flattened, to face the frontal view of the canvas. The computer screen is where these pieces begin to shape, while the canvas remains the analog approach of the painter’s hand.

MacNaughton previously qualified as a graphic designer and today employs her digital skills to her benefit. When analyzing her work, digitalized words such as masking and layering are common.

Between Digital and Raw

“I wanted my digital work to look raw and handmade. Now that I create ‘physical’ paintings, I want to give the illusion that the work is digital”, Kathryn says.

Digital and technical concepts go along with more romantic trends: dances across an outlined silhouette, guiding the viewer’s eye around the 2D curves as one guides the finger across a map.

The work simultaneously suggests femininity, as curves play shadow tricks, appearing as vessels that guide the eye. But also, the masculine: the austerity and monolithic qualities of shape, form, and line. We see references from Robert Morris to Georgia O’Keefe; Diebenkorn to DiChirico.

Design Brut, a non-profit initiative to engage children worldwide

Galerie Philia is delighted to announce the launch of Design Brut | Philia & Kids, the first edition of a non-profit initiative conceived to inspire, connect, and engage children worldwide with design, from reflection and conception to creation.

The project Design Brut is inspired by French artist Jean Dubuffet’s notion of ‘Art Brut,’ commonly translated as ‘raw art,’ i.e., art created outside the academic tradition of fine art by children and marginal communities.

Galerie Philia’s founder Ygaël Attali stimulates connections and reflections on design beyond academic conventions through low-cost and sustainable workshops and collaborations.

The answer is Design Brut | Philia & Kids, an inaugural workshop introducing children to the practice of sculptural design that took place earlier this year over five months in Provence.

Galerie Philia

Galerie Philia

How it works

Under the supervision of their teacher, children draw shapes and ideas on paper to form their interpretations of sculptural design. They also have the artistic direction of contemporary designers Antoine Behaghel and Alexis Foiny from Studio BehaghelFoiny.

But the fun part arrives when they turn their drawings into physical designs. They sculpt them in local olive wood by Studio BehaghelFoiny with the help of a regional cabinetmaker.

Galerie Philia

Later everybody gathers for a small display in the chapel, Notre-Dame-des-Monts, in the presence of the children and local community.

The project is part of a film unveiled at the Paris exhibition from 10 November to 8 December 2022.

About Galerie Philia

Launched in 2015, Galerie Philia is a contemporary international design and modern art gallery. It represents emerging and established designers and artists. The gallery is the brainchild of two brothers who share a passion for art, literature, and philosophy. The gallery’s non-hierarchical curation sits apart from the transiency of trends and focuses instead on the true aesthetic quality of the piece – alluring and timeless. Unlike others, Galerie Philia does not focus on a single style – minimalist, organic or raw – but embraces heterogeneity.

The gallery takes pride in discovering new talents, providing them with multiple international platforms to showcase their latest creations.

Such designers include Elisa Uberti (France), Lucas Morten (Sweden), Arno Declercq (Belgium), Pietro Franceschini (Italy), and Evan Fay (USA).

Galerie Philia also works with renowned practitioners such as Cristián Mohaded (Mexico), Jérôme Pereira (France), and Rick Owens (USA).

The gallery has a solid international presence, with galleries in Geneva, New York, Singapore, and Mexico City.

In addition to its permanent spaces, the gallery organizes temporary group exhibitions and artist residencies in first-class locations worldwide.

How to create a Meaningful Pencil Drawing

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to go to art school to create meaningful pencil drawings and become an artist. It certainly does help to have those tips and tricks you learn throughout your art classes, but they aren’t the only things that will help you create art that resonates with other people.

At the core of every piece of art is the hope that people care about your work. Art doesn’t always have to invoke negative emotions! Be it a positive resonance with the viewer, or a negative one, as long as you manage to touch people’s hearts, you have succeeded as an artist, and this is by no means an easy feat to achieve. If you are more adept at pencil drawings, this may be trickier for you.

Now you may be wondering, what makes a drawing meaningful? And how can you create your representative works? Here’s a guide to creating meaningful pencil drawings!

Practice, practice, practice!

It seems like a pretty obvious tip, and yet it’s one that many end up ignoring for its simplicity. Drawing is a skill, and it’s essential that you keep practicing and trying out new motions for your art to improve. To create a drawing that speaks to people, you have to be familiar with your subject, and for that, you’ll need a ton of practice!

PENCIL DRAWING TECHNIQUE

Forget about others’ opinions.

At the heart of a meaningful pencil drawing is an artist’s intention. If you want to create a great final piece solely for the trends or money, you can bid goodbye to the emotional aspect of the job. Instead of focusing on other people’s opinions and what they think you should draw, pour in all your energy into creating a pencil drawing that means a lot to you – that emotion will automatically translate into your work as well!

Graphite 1983 | Make a Difference
Make a Difference by Graphite

Use references but ignore the trends.

There is nothing wrong with using references. To create an incredible drawing, you will need to know the ins and outs of your subject, and references are your friends! However, make sure you are at a safe distance from trends. They might get you the short-term engagement you’ve been craving, but they will rarely end up being pieces that genuinely mean something to you, and by extension, the audience.

Draw from reality

What’s better than some references you find online? The real thing, of course! Another tip for creating meaningful pencil art is to go out into the world and take your environment as a reference. Although references are helpful, they rarely show you what’s going on behind a picture. Drawing from reality will allow you to translate that picture onto your art and learn a lot more, too!

Pencil Drawing technique

Know your medium

In this case, your medium is a pencil drawing. Know which pencils are best for specific subjects and what type of paper you will need to produce particular results. It would help if you learned the basics, although the technique and tricks will come from experience. Try different warm-up exercises for your wrist and your brain. Switch out your usual pencil for a different one – for instance, a lead pencil for a mechanical one. Test what you’re comfortable with, and experiment with what you’re new to.

Experiment

Last but not least, never stop experimenting – be it with different materials, new ideas, or fresh themes, don’t tie yourself down to what you’ve been creating. Keep moving and learning, and you will find what makes your art meaningful in no time! All that’s left is to put it to paper!

About Daniel Paul

Daniel Paul was born in 1984 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. A graduate of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague in 2012, his utmost inspiration is shape, weight, luminosity, structure, reflection, and smell. Daniel is an artist aiming to discover the potential of all the elements above and explore its possible approaches gradually to its mastery.

Hello Daniel. When have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I have known it since I was a small boy. Then I became fascinated with 3D printing as a tool to bring a digital model into physical reality. So today, I create in virtual space. After graduating, I worked in the entertainment industry, focusing on classical craft and digital technologies. A life-transformative experience in 2019 led me to start my independent project, Turbofolk sculptures, which expresses my perception of the current world we all share, yet some of us are destroying.

Can you briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

My driving force is technological development. So today, I create both in virtual space and using traditional techniques.

A life-transformative experience in 2019 led me to start my independent project, Turbofolk sculptures. With it, I may express my perception of the current world we all share, yet some of us are destroying it.

The realistic figural works may seem abstract, but each tells a specific story based on ethical and moral dilemmas. They call for an ambiguous interpretation that depends on the viewer’s perspective, which can be volatile—much like mine.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

David Altmejd and Xooang Choi are my favorite source of inspiration as artists. To create, I need to find space for the creative process to observe the changing world around me.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I want people to see my work as a record of a specifically entertaining intellect process rather than a dogma. “Sometimes I suffer from the feeling that people have stopped valuing life, displaced death, and even stopped appreciating the things they produce or consume. We abandon wisdom to satisfy our pride and throw ourselves in solitude instead of mutual joy. At the expense of experiencing the present, we have recourse to the idea of surviving in the future.”

Spread the word! Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

The Turbofolk project connects arts and ethical issues reflected in my artworks.

TURBOFOLK

(application text)

The figural sculpture collection Turbofolk is a moralistic call to reflect on today’s consumer-oriented world. The exhibition portrays the social problems associated with religion, gender, racism, ecology, and similar topics and opens questions such as using power and the freedom perception. It ironizes people’s connection to fleeting things and draws attention to a fact of separation from profound life experiences.

The way to express a given topic is always through a man and its corporeality. By using the characteristic symbols for each of the described issues, we obtain a person as a typus, a generic representative of a particular trend. We communicate attitude and approach to the world through the human body, its attributes, and positions. The bearer of the message is here sóma; péxis, the body radiated by the soul, is missing.

The final formal perfection and artificiality of the sculpture are intentional. It depicts the body as a product. It needs to be perfect for its purpose, any deviation from this idea is undesirable. Physical flawlessness has become a social norm. However, can such a conception of the body speak of beauty?

Just as a sentence acquires meaning only after understanding the relationships between individual words, the sculpture of this collection reveals its message only when understanding the used symbols used in their relationships. The sculptures are not an interpretation of specific stories but a leitmotif of a given theme, in which several moral positions collide. The messages are multi-layered and require a careful perception of the links between the used elements.

The 3D printing method

The creative process combines work in a digital environment and classic handcraft. The model created in the virtual space of a computer 3D program transfers to reality through a machine, while the other elements such as puttying, grinding, and painting follow a manual mode.

About Ioana Boros

Ioana Boros is a Romanian illustrator and fashion designer based in Cluj-Napoca. After earning a degree from the University of Arts and Design, Ioana worked as a fashion designer for a few years. During this time, she began drawing patterns and became interested in the world of traditional illustration.

Technique and Awards

Ioana’s contemporary illustrations and prints mainly consist of minimal shapes and lines, colors, and monochromatic combinations. Whatever Ioana expresses in her work, ideas and feelings are gradually marked through geometric shapes. To Ioana, even depicting a face and contrasting colors is an act of geometric combinations.

Boros concentrates on shaping a visual identity related to fashion illustrations. Her work was shown at a group exhibition at CICA Museum in South Korea, “Abstract Mind 2019”. She was also present at a group exhibition at CAGE Gallery Barcelona with “Joy” The Big Awards Edition 2018, published in Pictoria Vol 2 – “The Best Contemporary Illustrators Worldwide” edited by Capsules Book Australia and featured with “Wall. No.02” in the Fall 2019 Issue 4 of Circle Foundation – Quarterly Art Review – Lyon, France.

She also made the illustrations for the A-List Magazine summer issue of 2019. She participated in the anniversary exhibition Gala UAD Fashion Design – 25 years- at the Art Museum/Cluj-Napoca.

Daring Trash

Ioana also founded ‘Daring Trash,’ a contemporary women’s clothing brand that bears her artistic signature: minimal lines that form playful and innovative subjects, used to embellish casual and comfortable clothing.

She says on the website: “In other words, we believe that people are happy when they are comfortable, and they must break free from the strict limits of society to have some fun. We do not believe in fashion trends; instead, we wish to create our own stories by expressing our true selves.”
