About Pantónio

Pantonio, born António Correia, in 1975 in the Azores, Portugal, is a celebrated street artist known for his mesmerizing murals that capture the fluidity and dynamism of the natural world. With a distinguishable style characterized by flowing forms, Pantònio’s work often features swarms of animals—fish, birds, and other creatures—interwoven in ways that evoke movement and harmony within urban environments.

Pantónio’s Artistic Journey

Pantonio’s artistic journey began in his youth, but he gained significant recognition after moving to Lisbon, where he became an influential figure in the city’s vibrant street art scene. His murals, often colossal in scale, breathe life into urban landscapes, transforming blank walls into canvases that celebrate biodiversity. Each piece serves not only as an artistic expression but also as a commentary on the relationship between nature and urbanization.

Pantonio

Lisbon’s Influence

Pantónio’s imagery is also deeply influenced by the culture of Lisbon and the Tagus River. His works frequently depict elements associated with the river and its inhabitants, including sardines, cod, octopus, mermaids, ropes, and boats. This suggests a strong connection to the local environment and its traditional imagery. Furthermore, he draws inspiration from his surroundings, such as creating a mural inspired by a tree in a park. His artistic style, described as having a “very personal visual vocabulary and a strong graphic style with remarkable amplitude,” further suggests that his inspiration comes from a combination of his personal experiences and the vibrant cultural landscape of Lisbon.

Pantónio’s Technique and Aesthetics

The artist’s unique technique involves layering vibrant colors and dynamic shapes, creating a sense of depth and movement. This approach allows viewers to experience a visual narrative that captures the essence of life’s fluidity. Pantonio often draws inspiration from the rich natural surroundings of his native Azores, incorporating elements that reflect the islands’ biodiversity and ecosystems.

Pantonio’s work has transcended borders, with murals found in various countries, reflecting a global appreciation for his artistry. He has participated in numerous international street art festivals and exhibitions, further establishing his reputation as a leading figure in the contemporary street art movement.

His contributions extend beyond mere aesthetics; Pantonio aims to raise awareness about environmental issues through his art. By portraying the beauty and intricacy of animal life, he invites audiences to reflect on the importance of biodiversity and the impact of urban development on natural habitats.

Pantonio’s murals are often characterized by a blend of realism and abstraction. This technique not only showcases his technical skills but also creates a dialogue between the viewer and the artwork. The swirling patterns and vibrant colors pull the audience into a world where nature and urban life coexist, encouraging a deeper connection to the environment.

His works are not only visually stunning but also serve as poignant reminders of the beauty of nature and the need to protect it amidst the challenges of urbanization.

About Agostino Iacurci

Agostino Iacurci (b.1986) is a contemporary visual artist working with painting, murals, sculpture, drawings, and then welcoming space through installations. Originally from Foggia (southern Italy), Agostino’s art practice began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and then moved to various places, the last being Berlin for six years. Until 2022 he was in New York for a residency at ISCP (International Studio & Curatorial Program) in Brooklyn.

Iacurci has worked extensively in the public art context making large murals, alternating them with more traditional studio practice, experimenting with various mediums, and collaborating with other professionals, artisans, and crafters.

Often driven by a site-specific attitude, Iacurci manages heterogeneous materials, constantly manipulating them. By doing this, he generates images in which he willingly recounts cultural history, emotional memories, literary references, and tales.

About Sof

Going by the nickname of Sof, the emerging performance and mosaic artist grew up in France and now lives in Germany.

His [re]definition of mosaic involves light, magnetic fields, and matter. In his work, everything transforms through time. The viewer itself converts into a performer, taking part in the art by interacting and reshaping the piece. The new performer connects with matter while touching, feeling, and moving the tiles, releasing the light behind. Through this confrontation, matter reveals meanings. Each series is named after its material using anagrams, inviting one to decrypt and dive into the most immaterial beyond.

“I broke mosaic to extract an interactive system from the core of this ancient technique, extending the process of creation to anyone’s reach.”

Hue&Eye recently had the chance to interview Sof, to discover more about what drove him to make art.

When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I started studying art and applied arts at the age of fifteen. I’ve always kept creating alongside my professional life as a graphic designer, and in the last few years, I dedicated myself full-time to producing advanced pieces that I wanted to see and feel in reality.

May you briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

I use different techniques to create my pieces, but the genesis of this project was to explore and break the codes of one specific technique which is Mosaic.

As a teenager, we were not allowed to work with computers at school because the teachers wanted us to develop our brushwork and spontaneity skills.

Therefore, I felt the need to dive into digital experimentation at my parents’ house, while visiting on weekends.

This experience with pixels drove me to research the Mosaic technique. Since then, I’ve always worked on this project alongside my professional life, producing small pieces that I occasionally sell.

What started as a personal exploration then evolved, incorporating elements like light and magnetism. That’s when it became my drive to see it coming true.

Producing my mosaics is the most satisfying and fulfilling activity for me. It’s a journey about dedication and pushing the boundaries of creation. That’s what moves me.

What is the main feature that throughout the years has mostly changed in your work or practice?

What has changed is the production of pieces that are highly technical due to their specific components.

But also the meanings and poetry they have acquired.

I used to produce for the sake of the object and the pure exploration of bending the rules of Mosaic, without paying much attention to the subjects.

Now subjects emerged almost naturally, they were sort of hidden within the materials. This evolution brought me to become more detailed in selecting these materials and how I would work with them. It allowed me to start my exploration of the depth of Matter.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

A combination of some of the biggest figures of contemporary art these days. A mix between Eliasson, Kapoor, Hirst, and Kwade. They are the monuments that I admire. Experiencing their exhibitions brutally immerses your body and spirit.

I work at a much smaller scale, but still, I try to produce something similar around the relation between the viewer and the elements.

Outside visual arts, what keeps me motivated and also inspires my work are music and science.

Music is in constant motion and has an interactive essence as it penetrates our system to make our body move almost on its own!

Science is a crucial tool for understanding our universe and what it’s made of. It is food for creative thoughts when you want to involve a larger spectrum.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

Whatever they feel like, by simply interact physically with the pieces because that’s the idea. Also by engaging in my game and trying to decrypt the meanings that stand behind each series or piece. I give some hints regarding this game and I would find it funny already if people try to solve the anagrammatic enigmas. The idea is that it creates a reveal that emerges from their analysis. It’s another way to interact again.

B-Road

When: From March 25th to April 05th, 2023

Where: Medina Art Gallery – Via Merulana 220, Rome.

Pasquini’s project B-Road results from a journey to those places where life slows down and goes back to the streets. B-Roads are secondary paths, a suburban parallel universe where lives and communities meet more than in main streets where everything homologates.

Picture the road as the metaphor for the life path. In that case, the secondary road amplifies the sense of a personal journey in which digressions, changes of route, and loopholes are necessary.

Many works of unprecedented interest in energy, intensity, and fullness are on display.

Among these is the artificial nest, designed to house and protect birds engaged in the delicate stages of nesting and brooding. It becomes hope and shelter for humans: a place of passage and a crossroads from which to start again. Pushing us deeper, the lightness of the moment cannot avoid the memory of the migration and the precariousness of all the human communities that cannot find shelter.

Work Style

It is remarkable how Daria takes inspiration from the Bauhaus movement, the world’s first design school founded by German architect Walter Gropius. The Bauhaus was probably the most influential architectural movement in the 20th century, and Daria’s work is its comprehensive study.

She knows the harmony between shapes and colors, like the combination of pure geometry with a unique execution that defines her work, and her starting point is to explore and understand the entire space rather than focus on details. After doing so, she moves further to the palette choice – a process for which she takes her time to experiment. At last, she will start playing with forms and objects to find the chased harmony and balance.

Her style hints at big names such as Le Corbusier, Matisse, and Charlotte Perriand, though each piece of her work stands out for its modern design.

Daria Zinovatnaya is an international designer who has already worked on commercial and residential projects. For instance, in 2017, she won the Red Dot Award, a renowned international design competition. As for today, she appears in some of the most influential design magazines worldwide, such as AD, Casa Vogue Ell Decor, and Grazia, to mention a few.

Super Strike presents a behind-the-scenes perspective of one of Japan’s leading graffiti writers and urban artists, SUIKO. Hailing from Hiroshima, Suiko’s art has allowed him to travel extensively.

Super Strike presents his artistic versatility, highlights the global demand for his work, and presents a dialogue between his Japanese heritage, his artistic influences, and the communities he visits and with whom he collaborates.

“His activities influence many young generations (in Japan) who want to do art” – Bloomberg.

Super Strike is a unique document that exists to educate and inspire, published by Soi Books.

About SUIKO

SUIKO is a Hiroshima-based graffiti artist specializing in unique calligraphy-inspired characters with a profound source of stamina.

He was born in Oita, Japan, but grew up in Hiroshima, the city that became the base for all his artistic pursuits. Today he is considered one of the country’s leading graffiti writers.

He was named “SUIKO” when completing his 3rd Plastic Arts cycle at the Municipal University of Hiroshima. Already aiming for an international career, he chose a Japanese-sounding name, which could work just as well for a man as a woman. The word comes from 酔 酔 (suikyō: whim, whim, eccentricity), which reflects his constant desire to do things his way, as he sees fit.

Getting interested in graffiti in high school, SUIKO started painting on walls after graduation. Not knowing how to access this universe, he first got into skateboarding; it was by walking the streets and skateparks that he met the right people.

His focus today is lettering; his work is expressive and filled with bubbling shapes, dynamic lines, and vibrant color schemes.

Super Strike by SUIKO Super Strike by SUIKO Super Strike by SUIKO

Career

After participating in Japan’s first large-scale graffiti exhibition, “X-COLOR,” held at Art Tower Mito in 2005, SUIKO grew the scale of his activities to the United States, Germany, France, Brazil, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Nepal, and with invitations from various countries such as India, Tahiti, Australia, China, Hong Kong, and South Korea.

In addition to wall graffiti art, he worked for Walt Disney, Coca-Cola, Adidas, and ECKO Unltd. SUIKO revitalizes the local street scene as a “dim light” shop and art studio representative.

For him, everything he hasn’t done yet is potentially interesting and exciting. He puts no limits: indeed, he started on small walls to evolve and paint more significant and giant ones.

SUIKO looks forward to working with artists worldwide whose styles and cultural backgrounds differ from his. Above all, his traveling experiences, calligraphy, and Ukiyoe (Japanese woodblock prints) inspired his dynamic Chinese character designs, which have become his original style.

Although street art in Japan is still a little understood, he prefers to live in Hiroshima.

She received a degree in Korean Painting and fine art, another in Printmaking from Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul, and accomplished her MFA at the Goldsmiths University in London.

Juheon then worked as an artist traveling back and forth between the UK and Korea and already had four solo exhibitions.

The first one was held in London in 2015 with ‘The Little boy and a toxic Land’.

Juheon is an artist who always raises questions about the sensual experience starting from the boundary between reality and digital-based Korean Painting. After returning to Seoul from London, she taught contemporary art and Painting at Daegu University and Kyungpook University and currently lives and works as an artist in Berlin, Germany.

“From a young age, I have been moving frequently around with my family. As a consequence, I have left a lot of things behind, and the senses and memories I have are an irreversible experience that created a huge void filled with longing.”

Hello Juheon, tell us something more about your creative practice.

When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

When I was drawing coral reefs at my environment engineer father’s boring laboratory at 6 years old.

Can you briefly say something about your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

My root is from traditional Korean Painting. I use traditional materials, but I make art for the future as I am a millennial.

My task is to understand how the mass media images stimulate and distract people from the actual content and makes it harder for them to sympathize with the pain of others while attempting to interpret how the public responds to them. I use my chosen medium to remove and hide harmful elements to expose the viewer to what is happening. My works of art reform the content from the natural cruelty of the media displayed. This paradoxically maximizes the media’s position for the public consuming the image.

My works explore the extremes that the current surge of media has as an effect on the audience.

What main feature has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

My most extensive interest was the experience with sensuality in Digital media, but during the Covid time, we have been forced to stay in digital a lot. So I moved on to the experience and sensuality in our complex and tangible reality.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

Definitely, Aram Bartholl and Korean artist Osang Kwon. The multi-layers of experience, smell, sounds, and visuals from nature and its memories are my primary source of motivation.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I hope that my work will motivate people to share their experiences about sensuality within the brutal digital reality.

Spread the word! Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

I am currently hosting my 5th solo exhibition in Berlin. It is about the millennial’s memories and my Berlin home Obersee.

I would like to introduce this exhibition to many people.

About Germans Ermičs

Germans Ermics was born in Riga (Latvia) in 1985. He lived his academic years in Copenhagen (Denmark), where he studied design. Through an internship at the Rasmus Koch Studio, he developed his skills as a graphic designer. In 2007 he co-founded, as an art director, the Latvian culture magazine Veto, while starting his studies at the Design Academy in Eindhoven (NL). Here his primary focus was on furniture and interiors, and he accomplished his graduation in 2011 in the Department of Man & Living.

Career and Works

After working for several interior and graphic design clients, both Dutch and international, in 2014, Germans Ermics opened its studio in Amsterdam under the name of Studio Germans Ermičs.

Ermičs explores the subject of his fascination with glass and mirrors, experimenting and researching materials. Also, colors have a great influence in his works. He uses them so that materials are applied to seem more exciting than ever.

His work combines his graphic design skills with experimentation with different materials and perceptions of space.

Ombrè Glass Chair

Ombrè Glass Chair (2017) is a tribute to Shiro Kuramata (1934-1991), which iconic Glass Chair (1976) is one of the most influential furniture designs of the 20th century. For this reason, Kuramata’s Glass Chair sets a precedent for the design direction in glass. The chair emphasizes the simplicity and weightlessness of the material, as he was capable of joining six sheets of glass without the use of screws, mounts, or reinforcement. By employing the revolutionary product Photobond 100, Ermics brings the solid state of the glass to dissolve as it seems to hang in the air.

Where The Rainbow Ends

Germans Ermičs has created a technicolor pavilion for Instagram that brings the social network’s rainbow gradient to life. The glass cabin is a collaboration between the two on the occasion of the Cannes lions international festival of creativity in 2019.

Set on the french riviera, the 50sqm structure marks the first time Ermičs has worked on this scale. The Amsterdam-based designer is known for his work with colored glass, which uses a similar gradient style with solid pigments that fade to clear.
