About David Samuel Stern

David Samuel Stern was born in 1982 in Highland Park, a suburban city in Lake County (IL, USA). He got an MFA at the Washington University in 2006 and now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

As a child, he didn’t think about art much until taking a darkroom-photography course during a high-school summer break. From that moment on, thanks to that summer course and once learned the medium, David began to take art seriously.

Work

His latest work, Woven Portraits 2020, is the result of photographic prints on translucent vellum. David physically cut and weaved together by hand two portraits of the same person. He then merges them into one another to create an exciting pattern and incredible texture. Finally, carefully cuts them apart. The attempt he aims at by doing this is to give portraits a sort of abstraction to allow the subjects to hide within themselves. He indeed states on his website: “In hiding something we reveal others.” Also, to David, the process of making something is as necessary as the thing itself.

Technique

Each piece of the Woven Portrait series is a physically unique and one-of-a-kind portrait. The photographs, all taken in a lighting studio and printed on vellum, are all large-scale prints.

The palette of light and the delicate contrasts maximize the effect of overlapping two sides of a human being. By doing this, David generates two different emotions. The portraits are caught in one mid-motion, a mix of two attempts of an action.

David transforms the photographic prints by creating a painterly atmosphere. His method is simple yet powerful. However, the abstraction of his work hides elements and details of the portraits as well.

David features in several creative international magazines and has already exhibited both in various solo and group shows.

About Alberto Seveso

Alberto Seveso’s story begins in Milan, Italy, where he was born in 1976. Growing up in Sardinia, a region known for its serene landscapes and rich culture, Seveso’s environment undoubtedly shaped his creative mind.

From a young age, Seveso was drawn to the visual arts. Pencils and sketchpads were his constant companions, but it wasn’t just traditional art forms that captured his attention. As a child of the 80s, he was mesmerized by the explosion of graphic design in pop culture—think neon colors, bold typography, and eye-catching album covers.

Alberto Seveso’s Influences from the Digital Era

The rise of the internet and computer graphics in the 90s marked a pivotal point for Seveso. It was a time when technology changed how art could be created and consumed. The fusion of art and technology became his playground, with programs like Photoshop opening up a world of possibilities.

For Alberto Seveso, the transition from traditional mediums to digital art was both challenging and rewarding.

He initially worked with analog techniques, experimenting with photography and graphic design. But it was the allure of digital tools that ultimately pulled him in. Learning to manipulate images digitally was like discovering a new language, one he quickly became fluent in.

His early experiments caught the attention of the online art community. Websites and forums dedicated to graphic design showcased his innovative use of color and form, sparking interest in his work.

Alberto Seveso’s artworks are an explosion of colors and textures that feel organic and otherworldly.

TheDispersionEffect

Seveso is best known for his dispersion technique, where images appear to break apart into vibrant particles. This effect, often used in portraits, feels almost like a burst of creative energy frozen in time.

One of Seveso’s trademarks is blending photography with graphic elements. His portraits often start with real photographs, which he then transforms into surreal compositions using digital tools.

Alberto relies heavily on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, but he’s also known to experiment with 3D modeling software and other design tools to achieve his visionary results.

Over the years, Seveso’s work has found its way into magazines, advertising campaigns, and even album covers, solidifying his status as a modern art icon.

His collaborations with international brands like Adobe, Nikon, and Bacardi have not only expanded his audience but also showcased the versatility of his art.

Seveso’s work in the music industry deserves special mention. From designing vibrant album covers to contributing to music videos, his influence on pop culture is undeniable.

About Daria Vasileva

Daria Vasileva, currently living in Washington DC, USA, is a visual artist and fashion illustrator, with a special focus on people and fashion. In her artworks, Daria seeks to transcend the limits of fashion illustration, seamlessly transforming them into charming fashion portraits. Her unique style is influenced by classical art, concentrating on the portrayal of feelings and the beauty of the moment together with the depiction of individuals and their surroundings. Each painting tells a unique story. By utilizing figurative art, fashion, and decoration, Daria explores the intricate relationship between fashion and one’s individuality. She is driven by the desire to showcase fashion through her perspective by capturing the interaction between characters and fashion in everyday life, beyond fashion shows.

Hue&Eye recently interviewed her to discover more about what drove her to make art.

Hello Daria! When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I have loved drawing since my childhood. It is very organic for me. But only a few years ago I decided to combine two of my passions: fashion and art and become a professional artist.

Can you briefly say something about your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

Women and fashion are the two main themes of my artworks. I see myself as an artist whose paintings are elegant fashion illustrations, influenced by traditional art. What inspires me a lot is to show fashion through my perspective. Therefore, I capture characters in everyday situations. My paintings are stories, where either the fashion theme or the depicted character are both important as they support and complement each other.

All my artworks are painted in watercolors. I love this medium because I can achieve incredible transparency, and create a luminous and delicate effect that is unreachable with any other medium.

Daria Vasileva Daria Vasileva Daria Vasileva

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

I think the most important thing was the decision to follow my intuition to create with traditional mediums despite digital art trends and to establish my unique style as an artist.

Daria Vasileva Daria Vasileva Daria Vasileva

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

I would say that Henry Matisse and Amedeo Modigliani inspire me a lot with their mastery of color and unique style. Also, artists like Helen Downie and Laura Laine whose artworks and aesthetics I admire a lot. They fill me with a desire to create. And of course fashion, as the art by itself, is to me an endless source of inspiration and reflection.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I hope for my art to be perceived as a visual retreat to beauty and to evoke feelings of joy, happiness, and delight in my audience.

Spread the word! Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

Recently I participated in art awards and competitions, where my works have received recognition. One was especially important to me since it is a well well-known award among fashion illustrators. For now, I am focused on the creative process and new ideas.

About Maria Teresa Ortiz-Naretto

Maria Teresa Ortiz Naretto was born in Rancagua, Chile, and soon after raised between Argentina and Chile. She is currently based in New Jersey. Conserving the last names of her parents, Ortiz-Naretto praises her intriguing multicultural background that led the artist to immerse in drawing and painting, art history, and philosophy studies. These perspectives determine her paintings with profuse impasto, flat surfaces, and vivid colors, a style that far from being eclectic results in unique images of nature, myths, human figures, and portraits.

Hello Maria Teresa. When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I discovered I wanted to become an artist when I was nine years old and painted my first oil canvas. However, I changed my desired life many times. I earned my undergraduate in art history at the University of Buenos Aires, and one in philosophy at Rutgers University. Even though I studied art since I was very young, I kept it quiet because I believed I wasn’t good enough. Before my Rutgers graduation, I couldn’t breathe longer until I grabbed a pencil to draw. Since then, I haven’t stopped drawing, painting, and showing my artwork around.

Maria Teresa Ortiz Naretto
Goddesses Series – Sophia Loren

Can you briefly say something about your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

I mainly paint cold wax and oil on canvas. I apply the matter with palette knives because I create textures and movement with each stroke. In the end, the painting is a surface of colorful bas-relief.

I never let the yellow base dry completely. Then, on fresh areas of the surface, I mix cold wax and oil with the yellow base. It creates a fascinating surface in which I show control of colors and materials.

What drives me to make art is my self-discovery. I am looking at myself in each painting. Each artwork is a mirror of my inner desires and research. I believe that Paul Eluard describes this feeling wel when he says that the artist and his work are a mirror of each other.

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

I have earned self-confidence and better knowledge of my technique. My artworks show my style as portraits, landscapes, or human figures. I see that as my great accomplishment.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

Many artists have inspired me for different reasons. The shallow surface and profuse matter come from Dubuffet, mainly the painting “Apartment Houses, Paris.” The depiction of the painting comes from the Italian masters, from Michelangelo, Raphael, Parmigianino, and many others to whom I have drawn and studied. The carnations come from Lucien Freud and Jenny Saville.

Finally, my technique comes from the Fayum mummy portraits.

My children and my daily life keep me motivated.

Maria Teresa Ortiz Naretto
Goddesses Series – Kathrine Hepburn

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I wish people to ask questions about themselves, their stories, and my own. I dream that viewers discover something singular after they look at my artwork.

Maria Teresa Ortiz Naretto
Goddesses Series – Marylin Monroe

Spread the word! Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

I am creating a series dedicated to women actresses of the 1910s with my Goddesses Series. Many of these women have been forgotten. I wish to show that their heritage is part of the cinematographic history and the women’s stories.

The series is still in its process, but you can view it here.

Chip7Land – A Monograph About Thai American Graffiti Artist

Chip7Land is a Bangkok-based mixed media artist. He has reached a podium in the upper class of graffiti artists over the last 20 years.

Chip still paints after two decades because he finds it fun and sees it as a connective thread to his youth.

He constantly puts a lot of energy into his work from abstract painting to graffiti to sticker to rapping.

The Cultural Duality

Living between cultures, the western and the eastern, is a state Chip consistently shows in his work. Vibrant colors of the 90s urban western graffiti merged with eastern typography, and the “organic-techno-style” are all aspects of his visionary spirit.

Techno-Organic Style

He is known for creating a unique and essential “Chip7” style he calls “techno-organic”. It may refer to the duality of past and present, raw and sophisticated. It may even reconnect to its mixed western and eastern roots. Indeed, Chip loves living in Thailand as, aside from being a friendly country, they won’t put him in jail for being a graff contrary to what might happen in the States.

Furthermore, he was a founding member of the legendary crew MAYHEM and appeared as a future star in the book The History of American Graffiti. Most of Chip’s recent work gets inspiration from his Thai and Southeast Asian ancestral roots. Also, the Hindu epic stories such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana are influent.

Another significant value of being a graffiti artist for Chip leans on teamwork and trust, which are essential for its flout and bohemian nature.

About Chip7Land’s Monograph

Chip7Land recently and energetically produced a monograph with Stickerbomb and Soi Books, highlighting some of his work over the last twenty years.

The book invites us to see Bangkok from Thai-American Graffiti Legend Chip7’s point of view, as no one around paints likewise. His ‘Techno-Organic’ vibe has set him apart from many graffiti contemporaries.

This book features original photography and hand-drawn annotations and will appeal to all those who love graffiti and street art and want fresh insights into cities, towns, and countries worldwide.

About Claudia Starkey

Claudia Starkey is a mixed media artist from Romania who resided in the United States since the early 2000s. Her artworks connect diverse ancestral portraits and childhood memories. Also, recent photos of her children and friends and uncommon travel destinations, span decades from the 1920s to the present.

Furthermore, Starkey has developed a keen interest in deploying artificial intelligence (AI) technology and its potential impact on humanity’s future. She ponders whether AI will merely serve as a mirror reflecting human expression. Alternatively, it may surpass it, providing food for thought to all those who contemplate the intersection of art and technology. Will it be a mere tool that augments human creative capacity, or will it transform the very nature of art? Starkey’s art invites all contemplating the junction of art and technology to commit to these discussions.

The Love Machine Series

Love Machine is a photographic series created using the first generation of artificial intelligence. It presents a captivating and insightful glimpse into the early days of AI’s attempt to mimic human creativity.

This series of retro female robots, created by visionary artist Claudia Starkey, explores the relationship between AI and human emotions while documenting a moment in history when AI was still in its infancy. Algorithms have evolved to create more sophisticated and elaborate models. However, the photos in this series showcase the humble beginnings of AI’s creative journey. Claudia wants them to show as a piece of history, documenting the early steps of AI in our world.

Claudia Starkey | Love Machine Claudia Starkey | Love Machine

Does AI Have Feelings?

Starkey’s interest in artificial neural paths led her to examine what love and companionship might look like to a robotic intelligence. The resulting photos are a valuable contribution to the field, capturing a moment in history when AI was still in its early stages. As the relentless march of time unfolds, the evolution of AI technology will continue to push the boundaries of what was once considered unimaginable.

Love Machine reminds us of the humble beginnings of this revolutionary technology, full of potential and a concern for the future of our world. While AI technology has achieved significant strides in emulating human behavior and emotions, the extent to which it can genuinely comprehend and experience love remains a subject of ongoing debate and speculation within the scientific and philosophical communities. It also challenges us to consider the ethical implications of creating machines that can mimic human emotions and behaviors.

Are Robots Our Future Companions?

Love Machine is not only a playful exploration of the broad themes of human love and sexuality. It also touches upon a timely and critical issue: the emerging discussion around the role of robots as companions and even romantic partners in the not-so-distant future. Such developments pose significant ethical questions and concerns about the nature of human-robot interactions and the potential implications for society. Talking About Toy Face

“As a visual artist,” he says, “my primary goal is to create artwork that connects with people on an emotional level. My chosen medium for achieving this is Toy Faces, a collection of portraits reminiscent of childhood toys that evoke nostalgia and comfort.”

Each Toy Face captures the subject’s unique features, personality, and spirit. Amrit pays special attention to the colors and patterns on each portrait, using them to enhance the toy-like aesthetic.

Artist Statement

He continues: “My inspiration for Toy Faces comes from my love of toys and the memories they bring. As a matter of fact, toys have a unique ability to transport us back to when life was simpler and full of wonder. With each Toy Face, I aim to tap into that sense of childlike curiosity and create a connection between the viewer and the subject.

Toy Face is a reminder of the power of simplicity in a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming and chaotic. I hope Toy Face brings the viewer comfort and joy, reminding us that there is always room for playfulness in our lives.”

About The Exhibition

Amrit Pal Singh’s adorable toy faces celebrate a whimsical childhood that transcends age and persists through adulthood. A delightful sense of playfulness characterizes Amrit’s 3D toy-like renditions of characters, figures, and movements through contemporary culture.

Amrit’s ever-growing collection of toy faces has reimagined inspiring humans from music, technology, and 90s web culture. Coinciding with his 100th NFT drop, Amrit’s first solo exhibition returns to the project’s origins by delving into icons from the art world. Presented in a physical art collector’s toy room with a toy-like interpretation of iconic furniture works, Amrit unveils eight new toy faces of iconic artists highlighted by an official collaboration with the M.F. Husain estate.

Exhibition’s Close-Up

The exhibition brings a virtual world to reality by enabling visitors to enter a digital toy room for the first time. The digital meets physical, and art meets utility in the liveable expression of one of Amrit’s fantastical rooms. In this offline world, viewers will embrace childhood wonder while celebrating the artistic contributions of the art world’s legendary greats.

Quote from Sahil Arora, Founder of Method
