Marina Esmeraldo is an illustrator & Art Director that splits her time between Barcelona and London, creating colorful images for music, fashion, publications & brands. With her witty and vibrant layouts, she attracts a range of commissions as her digitalized drawings are perfect for the internet age.

Before enrolling in the Applied Mural Arts course at the Escola Massana, she had her post graduation at the ELISAVA in Barcellona. Combining together all her gained soecilaties, she finally ended up in illustration, finding this discipline the most satisfying for her image making process. Marina’s style is bursting with experimental shape, pattern, and composition, adding a computerized dimension to her once tropical surroundings.

Marina Esmeraldo has exhibited around the world, including in the Venice Biennale, and been awarded honors in Europe, the U.K., the U.S. and Latin America. Her clients include Google, Adidas, Sony, ASOS, Refinery29, Lenny Letter, Wired, Women’s March and many others. Marina Esmeraldo is also co-founder and art director of In Shades Magazine, a weekly illustrated short fiction magazine.

Karol Banach is an illustrator originally from Poland, where he still lives and works. He’s a hip-hop fan, coffee addict and tattoo obsessive. Although he only just had his graduation in 2016 from a 5-year BA & MA course, Karol has already collected a strong list of editorial and commercial clients. These include Ikea, Samsung, Costa Coffee, American Express, The Washington Post, New Republic, and Newsweek.

His work is vivid, geometric and surreal, both filled with classical or futuristic acts. Karol well adapts to the given brief, still maintaining an editorial freedom that is always well appreciated. The color palette then is for him something he meticulously concentrates on, to express the mood of his layouts and characters at best.

His illustrations are inspired by both classical painters like Picasso and Basquiat and the multitude of modern art he finds online to create his surreal style. He also has an alias name, Korneliusz, and as a kid was a Lego and small cars fan. He now defines himself quite an expert of a mixed media style from which he gains his final pieces, made up from collages, vector images, drawings with acrylics or pencils etc. Everything helps him out to start with a new project: music, everyday inspiration, contemporary and classical art, and his art it’s like an experiment through which he searches for new techniques, compositions, and style.

Karol indeed doesn’t like the idea of being conceived in one unique and only visual style, although we have to admit that his latest artworks are well recognizable. He is a free minded young man, looking forward only to work through his passion for creativity as much as possible.

For Ekaterina Busygina, architecture is something to get inspired from to better understand people, cultures and the reflection of character and trends of a place. This is well represented in her ongoing series of photographs made in Hong Kong titled ‘City Maze’. She was amazed by the city’s skyscrapers, reflecting the one in another, as for the whole city’s perfect harmonic geometry.

“This city is always in a hurry and these skyscrapers are silent guards, which are turned to the sky, but by staying for a second and then lifting the sight up, you’ll see in the sun another world – a world of slender geometry, architectural harmony, in its pure perfection. We so rarely look up and miss so much beauty.”, she says on her Behance page.

From May to September, Hong Kong’s typical weather is very unpredictable. The city is characterized by a gloomy yet mysterious atmosphere, and Ekaterina has managed to capture this unique atmosphere in this beautiful photo series.

Originally from Russia, Ekaterina Busygina has always aspired her work through architecture and design in all forms and manifestations. Her images are filled with a creative use of the detail and composition, to inform the viewer of the existence of other forms of beauty hidden in alternative perspectives. Her series ‘White City’, for instance, is a showcase of what future cities will look like according to her.

“If you are for the first time here (Moscow), you will be amazed by the atmosphere, the emptiness, the serenity of the white city,” Ekaterina says about this set. “But equally interesting will be the discovery that you are still in the center of Moscow.”

Ekaterina used Moscow’s architecture to explore the idea of ultra-modern cityscapes being white, serene, and strikingly coordinated. Through this series, she explains how architectural photography may be an effective tool to develop the power of imagination and prediction.

She recently won the One Eyeland Award 2017 and has been published worldwide, as in Vogue Italia and Elle Decoration Russia just to mention few.

Mariana Murta, Born in 1991 in Antwerp, is currently participating at the STARTPOINT Prize 2017 with Embrace, her last series of paintings, which take up an entire wall of the Academy’s venue at the Art et Amicitiae building in central Amsterdam.

Upon arrival her artwork it’s of a certain impact, as the uniformly large format of the series and it’s vivid color palettes achieve the same effect of stained windows in a church. This association also defines the existential arena in which the paintings are set. From the neutrally optimistic environment of an aircraft interior, the painting takes us directly to the battlefield of life with all its pressures and current social problems.

Mariana is fascinated by the feeling of being obsessed with those objects in our daily life from which we cannot detach ourselves from, even while we remain aware of their artificiality. This process is the main element of her research, the ability and struggle to find what helps us (or not) to create the image that we portray of ourselves to the world.

In Embrace, Mariana combines aggressively reassuring pastel tones with intense colors, and sections defined by rapid bruchstrokes are contrasted with the minute detailed of almost horror movie-like deformed parts of human bodies. This introverted relentlessness strikes a chord in all of us.

Dutch illustrator Levi Jacobs lives in Rotterdam, where he enjoys his neighbor full of cats and plants.

As most every kid, Levi was one of those who found great fun in drawing and coloring, but just after art school, he started thinking about design as something more than a fascinating hobby. His main subjects have always been animals and there is obviously a simple reason why. He has often thought of human characters as difficult and scary as if to draw them he had to deal with a mirror-like process.

Levi Jacobs
@ Levi Jacobs – Technowoman
Levi Jacobs
@ Levi Jacobs – Technowoman

Nowadays though he started to deal with human subjects, always by giving the character a feeling of coming from another dimension, quite surreal or at least far away from its own one, comparable to a sort of human-like androids and no-emotional. This is also a peculiar trick he allows himself to have more freedom of drawing them not anatomically perfect. We could then say that Levi is a fan of geometry. He starts all his artworks from a grid and gives special attention to the aesthetic of geometry as he finds it an easy process to give more discipline to his workflow. This matters also for his chosen color palettes. He limits it all the time to few options.

As most every illustrator who started with an analog approach, he now feels a bit guilty to have abandoned his pen for the digital approach, or more specifically the pen tablet. But these are now artists tools he could not live without anymore. Again, this is for Levi part of simplifying the process to give more space to the creative flow.

Chad Wys is a visual artist, designer, and writer who lives and works in Illinois, US. “I’m an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of historical semiotics and contemporary cybernetic visual reception…”.  This is how Wys describes his visual approach.

We could translate this as a passion Chad has in picking historical and famous art pieces and reconsider its beauty.

He explores the inner sense of what we conventionally consider as beautiful, to look at our sense of self and community from another point of view.

As a student, Chad Wys shifted his time between literature and art history. He then went for studies in Visual Culture at the Illinois State, to deepen the critique of images and the philosophy of art with an interdisciplinary eye toward the ways we use signs and symbols to interpret ideas, as for words and images to communicate.

His approach to visual art is indeed experimental and challenging, as for his approach to the concepts he chooses.

Juxtaposing materials, examining theories and overlapping both theoretical and technical visual layers is what characterizes his language and core passions.

Craft and critique—as verbs and nouns—are themselves my tools as well as my subjects,” he says.

His aim as a creative minded person is to twist comforts into curiosity and to focus on the process of reception, to not give anything for granted.

Sometimes his artworks are fun and meaningful, or introvert and abstract, yet he always strives to seek new approaches to old challenges.

Danish Thomas Blankschøn works for a variety of clients as an art director and illustrator and when not working he’s concentrated on personal projects. His workflow might be defined in several ways: abstract, playful, fluid, but all the elements and visual languages were chosen to create an individual and recognizable style.

As a kid, Thomas has always opted for paper and crayons rather than computer games and has always been fascinated by the magic of creating something totally new out of a blank sheet of paper. Years after, he studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and The School of Design in Copenhagen.

He currently lives in Berlin, where his workplace is also a big collection of books and sketches, a space where he works by himself and gets inspired by daily events and the whole world wide web. Thomas is always working on creating playful and experimental artworks besides he always looks out for different materials and new drawing techniques as he gets easily bored with conventional typography. His works though often start from a black and white approach, as he strongly thinks that “… if it will work in black and white it will also work in colors”. He believes all colors are great, they just need to be combined in the right way.

One of the best pieces of advice he earned was from one of his academic teachers Charlie Meaker who challenged him to think differently and to break the norm, quoting the phrase: “Break the rules and give em’ hell!”. This is still the most valuable starting point of all Thomas’s works.

This said Mairi’s daily interest is to create engaging compositions pieced together with all the materials she collects, especially by juxtaposing a variety of media to best show the beauty of surface, space pattern, and color. Her style is narrative, she talks of places she finds interesting, unfamiliar surroundings and landscapes, quiet architectures and lifestyles of people they catch her eye.

Her approach may be defined as of a collage-painter, whilst still using pencils, scissors, glue sticks and photographs of her own. She is more of a mixed-media artist, although the art world, including Saatchi Art which she is represented by, places her in the painter’s section.

Italian Gianfilippo De Rossi (Rome, 1987), is now based in Los Angeles where he found the perfect place where to get inspired by photography. He had soon captured what the United States could make him gain in this field, as he studied photography at the Santa Monica College to then meet and learn all the essential techniques thanks to a collaboration with renowned photographer Douglas Kirkland.

During the past years, Gianfilippo De Rossi has then worked for some of the biggest newspapers and magazines, such as Vanity Fair and the Rolling Stones or Il Giornale and Il Messaggero (famous Italian newspapers).

In his Urban Lansdcape series he focuses on Los Angeles with a different eye, hence he neglected to represent the Angel’s City as all palm trees and beach wears, instead he opted for bright geometries and total absence of everyday commercials, as for people or any kind of trend.

The result is an abstract vision made of buildings and saturated tones, to recreate an aesthetic comparable to De Chirico, with his desolated environments, full-bodied colors, and geometric shapes. This was a successful project that de Rossi undertook, as he has always worked as street photographer and photojournalist.

Urban Landscape is also a project he carried on for 2 years. It was born from the need to find precision in the composition of the architecture of the city of Los Angeles, as a challenge to find a harmony of lines and colors in a city of 10 million people. So the subject he shoots is not fairly important, rather it’s the composition itself and the balance of the elements in it.
