About Ioana Boros

Ioana Boros is a Romanian illustrator and fashion designer based in Cluj-Napoca. After earning a degree from the University of Arts and Design, Ioana worked as a fashion designer for a few years. During this time, she began drawing patterns and became interested in the world of traditional illustration.

Technique and Awards

Ioana’s contemporary illustrations and prints mainly consist of minimal shapes and lines, colors, and monochromatic combinations. Whatever Ioana expresses in her work, ideas and feelings are gradually marked through geometric shapes. To Ioana, even depicting a face and contrasting colors is an act of geometric combinations.

Boros concentrates on shaping a visual identity related to fashion illustrations. Her work was shown at a group exhibition at CICA Museum in South Korea, “Abstract Mind 2019”. She was also present at a group exhibition at CAGE Gallery Barcelona with “Joy” The Big Awards Edition 2018, published in Pictoria Vol 2 – “The Best Contemporary Illustrators Worldwide” edited by Capsules Book Australia and featured with “Wall. No.02” in the Fall 2019 Issue 4 of Circle Foundation – Quarterly Art Review – Lyon, France.

She also made the illustrations for the A-List Magazine summer issue of 2019. She participated in the anniversary exhibition Gala UAD Fashion Design – 25 years- at the Art Museum/Cluj-Napoca.

Daring Trash

Ioana also founded ‘Daring Trash,’ a contemporary women’s clothing brand that bears her artistic signature: minimal lines that form playful and innovative subjects, used to embellish casual and comfortable clothing.

She says on the website: “In other words, we believe that people are happy when they are comfortable, and they must break free from the strict limits of society to have some fun. We do not believe in fashion trends; instead, we wish to create our own stories by expressing our true selves.”

Katya Dorokhina is a Moscow based illustrator developing a unique style which is becoming more and more recognizable in the art world.

Her core signature is the combination of nighttime palettes and neon colors, filled with contrast, bright shades, and glitchy effects. Her figures are simple and geometric, but she could spend hours on tiny details.

In Wonderzine, one of her most recent works, she crosses the difficult issue of sexual harassment within the family.

Her drawing technique is made up sketching before editing the elements in Photoshop, where she may experiment and play with light and color, probably this colorful approach is due to her nostalgic view of the past 90s.

Her impressive resume includes commissions for Interview MagazineEsquire Russia as well as fashioned-themes gifs for The Blueprint and illustrations for women’s magazine Wonderzine. Though her biggest break came when she designed a panel comic for H&M’s Kenzo collection, telling “a noir story about the love, rebellion, and freedom of art.”

The illustrator added: “I was inspired by the bright, floral patterns, wild colors and cool ambassadors of the collection.”

Karol Banach is an illustrator originally from Poland, where he still lives and works. He’s a hip-hop fan, coffee addict and tattoo obsessive. Although he only just had his graduation in 2016 from a 5-year BA & MA course, Karol has already collected a strong list of editorial and commercial clients. These include Ikea, Samsung, Costa Coffee, American Express, The Washington Post, New Republic, and Newsweek.

His work is vivid, geometric and surreal, both filled with classical or futuristic acts. Karol well adapts to the given brief, still maintaining an editorial freedom that is always well appreciated. The color palette then is for him something he meticulously concentrates on, to express the mood of his layouts and characters at best.

His illustrations are inspired by both classical painters like Picasso and Basquiat and the multitude of modern art he finds online to create his surreal style. He also has an alias name, Korneliusz, and as a kid was a Lego and small cars fan. He now defines himself quite an expert of a mixed media style from which he gains his final pieces, made up from collages, vector images, drawings with acrylics or pencils etc. Everything helps him out to start with a new project: music, everyday inspiration, contemporary and classical art, and his art it’s like an experiment through which he searches for new techniques, compositions, and style.

Karol indeed doesn’t like the idea of being conceived in one unique and only visual style, although we have to admit that his latest artworks are well recognizable. He is a free minded young man, looking forward only to work through his passion for creativity as much as possible.

Dutch illustrator Levi Jacobs lives in Rotterdam, where he enjoys his neighbor full of cats and plants.

As most every kid, Levi was one of those who found great fun in drawing and coloring, but just after art school, he started thinking about design as something more than a fascinating hobby. His main subjects have always been animals and there is obviously a simple reason why. He has often thought of human characters as difficult and scary as if to draw them he had to deal with a mirror-like process.

Nowadays though he started to deal with human subjects, always by giving the character a feeling of coming from another dimension, quite surreal or at least far away from its own one, comparable to a sort of human-like androids and no-emotional. This is also a peculiar trick he allows himself to have more freedom of drawing them not anatomically perfect. We could then say that Levi is a fan of geometry. He starts all his artworks from a grid and gives special attention to the aesthetic of geometry as he finds it an easy process to give more discipline to his workflow. This matters also for his chosen color palettes. He limits it all the time to few options.

As most every illustrator who started with an analog approach, he now feels a bit guilty to have abandoned his pen for the digital approach, or more specifically the pen tablet. But these are now artists tools he could not live without anymore. Again, this is for Levi part of simplifying the process to give more space to the creative flow.
