About Otto Baum

Otto Baum (b. 1979, East Berlin) studied textile and surface design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, and now lives and works in Berlin.

He is currently creating stunning videos of himself making murals, usually large format, geometric and monochromatic while testing his latest OttoTools. OttoTools are his investigation of trying out various everyday tools for large-format painting mediums. He usually uses wooden slats, a few brushes, and screws and combines them into a new painting tool.

Hand lettering and abstract painting

Otto holds multiple accounts for his art practice, ranging from prints to objects to murals and letterforms. He calls a project of much of his hand lettering work “Wallphabets,” a hybrid of alphabets written directly onto walls. For him, it’s about the craft itself, the shape of the letters, and transferring them analogously to the wall, so he practices his skills with the brush to draw these beautiful writings by hand.

Baum is fascinated by simple forms, the feel, and the structure of materials such as wood and paper. He is interested in how unpredictable analog printing techniques such as linocuts or monotypes can be.

6 Artists to Follow in 2023

We selected 6 artists to follow in 2023, but to discover them, let’s dive back to the past year. The contemporary art market is officially back in motion, and 2022 saw particularly notable increases in interest in street artists, abstract painters, fine art photographers, and expressive portraiture. Producing quality and thought-provoking work, the artists on this list are making waves in the contemporary art world.

1. Felipe Pantone

Felipe Pantone is an Argentinian artist, born in Buenos Aires. When he was young, he moved to Spain to discover graffiti and, later, experiment with it. He obtained an Art diploma in Valencia, where he still has his studio.

An eternal wanderer, his mural paintings are visible in Tokyo, London, Osaka, Paris and many other cities.

Felipe Pantone draws inspiration from several artists like José María Yturralde, Frédéric Platéus, Herb Lubalin, Sozyone Gonzalez, Steven Powers, not to mention Demsky.

His work combines typography and abstraction with extremely modern aesthetics. Strictly avant garde, his unique style re-invents graffiti art with futuristic and kinetic art. He uses a palette of colors with geometric pattern of optical art, by defying movement and perspective. A true chameleon, he explores text, neon and metallic colors.

Felipe Pantone puts together a new visual language, on the borders of the digital era, technology and society.

His work has been exhibited around Europe, America, Australia and Asia.

2. Maude Ovize

Born in 1980, Maude Ovize is a French artist, living and working in Lyon.

Graduated from the fine arts of Saint Etienne, she moved to Lyon in 2005 and works since the question of the motif in painting. She is part of a collective of artists working in a workshop on the slopes of the Red Cross, the Mecca of the Lyon creation.

In her journey around the question of the motif, Maude Ovize is currently working on a series devoted to water which she explores all aspects: sensation, matter, light, color.

3. Kaws

Brian Donnelly, aka Kaws, is an American artist and designer born in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. As a street artist, painter, illustrator, sculptor, publisher, his work touches on everything that surrounds the world of Pop Art.

After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Art in Illustration in 1996 from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Kaws briefly worked for Disney as a freelance animator. Today he lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Kaws began his career in the 1990s with street interventions. He superimposed his own work onto billboards, bus stops, and phone booth advertisements. As he became more well-known, his ads were taken down and collected by people. He created or reused well-known characters from comics and cartoons in his offbeat imagery. Subjects like the Michelin Man, the Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Sponge Bob, are all common figures rooted in the collective imagination that allows the artist to adopt a universal language. Kaws’s goal is to make art accessible to all. He signs all his creations with a very particular trademark: figures with crossed-out eyes, making his style easily recognizable.

After becoming famous, Kaws appropriated different techniques and extended his artistic production to the world of sculpture and painting on canvas. The passage from 2D to 3D works is motivated by his search for greater mastery of space and reality. His sculptures can reach monumental dimensions. Some of his giant characters have been exposed in front of museums, and they never fail to draw the attention of passers-by.

Kaws’s work is influenced by Pop Art, but also by artists such as Gerhard RichterClaes Oldenburg, or Chuck Close.

4. Thandiwe Muriu

Passionate about photography since the age of 14, Thandiwe Muriu grew up in Kenya in a family marked by art, surrounded by a sister who is a stylist and a second one, a virtuoso pianist. She refined her photographic practice during her teenage years, influenced by Vogue magazine and the aesthetic canons in the front page of this women’s publication. She took one of her sisters as a model and tried to portrait her with complete freedom.

It is the time of the rise of social networks, her photographs meet a great success and lead her to sign her first commission as a young talent.

After graduation, passionate about the 8th art, she dedicates herself definitively to fashion photography and at the age of 23, signs her first contract for an international campaign.

Like her fellow citizens, it is important for her to highlight the natural beauty of women with whom she identifies herself. Her compositions are in keeping with the beauty criteria of a black femininity. Essential models for the African readership at home and from the diaspora too often absent from the front pages of magazines.

Also, she sublimates through her art, black skin and afro hairstyles that deserve to be more than ever valued. Moreover, the photographer reconnects with the glorious past of African empires by using fabric, declined in frank and vivid colors enveloping her subjects.

Determined, passionate, she wishes to spearhead a new generation of committed women entrepreneurs in Kenya through her art, destined to write an inspiring story for many of them. Next challenge? To photograph a cover of Vogue.

She considers the series entitled “Camo” (2015) as a particularly personal achievement marking a decisive stage in her artistic process.

5. Okuda

Okuda (Oscar San Miguel) is a Spanish artist born in 1980 in Santander. He lives and works in Madrid. His work deals with the meaning of life and its contradictions. The artist tries to make us reflect upon the conflits between modernity and humanity’s roots, upon war and violence.

Okuda is a major international artist, selected in the top 100 of the Urban Contemporary Art Guide 2014. He has worked with major brands and travels the world painting on trains, buildings, walls and showing his work in major art galleries.

Chip7Land – A Monograph About Thai American Graffiti Artist

Chip7Land is a Bangkok-based mixed media artist. He has reached a podium in the upper class of graffiti artists over the last 20 years.

Chip still paints after two decades because he finds it fun and sees it as a connective thread to his youth.

He constantly puts a lot of energy into his work from abstract painting to graffiti to sticker to rapping.

The Cultural Duality

Living between cultures, the western and the eastern, is a state Chip consistently shows in his work. Vibrant colors of the 90s urban western graffiti merged with eastern typography, and the “organic-techno-style” are all aspects of his visionary spirit.

Techno-Organic Style

He is known for creating a unique and essential “Chip7” style he calls “techno-organic”. It may refer to the duality of past and present, raw and sophisticated. It may even reconnect to its mixed western and eastern roots. Indeed, Chip loves living in Thailand as, aside from being a friendly country, they won’t put him in jail for being a graff contrary to what might happen in the States.

Furthermore, he was a founding member of the legendary crew MAYHEM and appeared as a future star in the book The History of American Graffiti. Most of Chip’s recent work gets inspiration from his Thai and Southeast Asian ancestral roots. Also, the Hindu epic stories such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana are influent.

Another significant value of being a graffiti artist for Chip leans on teamwork and trust, which are essential for its flout and bohemian nature.

About Chip7Land’s Monograph

Chip7Land recently and energetically produced a monograph with Stickerbomb and Soi Books, highlighting some of his work over the last twenty years.

The book invites us to see Bangkok from Thai-American Graffiti Legend Chip7’s point of view, as no one around paints likewise. His ‘Techno-Organic’ vibe has set him apart from many graffiti contemporaries.

This book features original photography and hand-drawn annotations and will appeal to all those who love graffiti and street art and want fresh insights into cities, towns, and countries worldwide.

About SUIKO

SUIKO is a Hiroshima-based graffiti artist specializing in unique calligraphy-inspired characters with a profound source of stamina.

He was born in Oita, Japan, but grew up in Hiroshima, the city that became the base for all his artistic pursuits. Today he is considered one of the country’s leading graffiti writers.

He was named “SUIKO” when completing his 3rd Plastic Arts cycle at the Municipal University of Hiroshima. Already aiming for an international career, he chose a Japanese-sounding name, which could work just as well for a man as a woman. The word comes from 酔 酔 (suikyō: whim, whim, eccentricity), which reflects his constant desire to do things his way, as he sees fit.

Getting interested in graffiti in high school, SUIKO started painting on walls after graduation. Not knowing how to access this universe, he first got into skateboarding; it was by walking the streets and skateparks that he met the right people.

His focus today is lettering; his work is expressive and filled with bubbling shapes, dynamic lines, and vibrant color schemes.

Super Strike by SUIKO Super Strike by SUIKO Super Strike by SUIKO

Career

After participating in Japan’s first large-scale graffiti exhibition, “X-COLOR,” held at Art Tower Mito in 2005, SUIKO grew the scale of his activities to the United States, Germany, France, Brazil, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Nepal, and with invitations from various countries such as India, Tahiti, Australia, China, Hong Kong, and South Korea.

In addition to wall graffiti art, he worked for Walt Disney, Coca-Cola, Adidas, and ECKO Unltd. SUIKO revitalizes the local street scene as a “dim light” shop and art studio representative.

For him, everything he hasn’t done yet is potentially interesting and exciting. He puts no limits: indeed, he started on small walls to evolve and paint more significant and giant ones.

SUIKO looks forward to working with artists worldwide whose styles and cultural backgrounds differ from his. Above all, his traveling experiences, calligraphy, and Ukiyoe (Japanese woodblock prints) inspired his dynamic Chinese character designs, which have become his original style.

Although street art in Japan is still a little understood, he prefers to live in Hiroshima.

About Andrew Hem

Raised in Los Angeles, artist Andrew Hem was born during his parents’ flight from Cambodia in the Khmer Rouge genocide wake. He grew up carrying two opposite cultures – the rural one of his Khmer ancestors and the vivid urban one of the Los Angeles neighborhood he lived in. Andrew felt soon drawn by the infinite graffiti murals of his city. So from an early age, he gained good skills through graphics and composition by experimenting with some graffiti. Later he applied for and achieved a degree from the Art Center College of Design.

Artwork and Practice

Through his imagery, Andrew typically depicts individual characters in their space, which doesn’t always resemble the real world. This artist’s choice enhances the illusionistic feeling of memories and dreams. His chosen color palette doesn’t usually match reality, yet he recreates through colors a natural rendering.
Hem echoes graffiti art as an allusion to street culture, art, and fashion. Andrew’s narrative style combines gouache, oil, and acrylic paint.
Still floating or staring, his characters are all framed in their spaces as if the environment froze them to highlight the individual’s essence. The bodies fill the canvas to interpret their crucial role. It’s through the backgrounds that Andrew explores the narrative details of the depicted emotions. The decisive mood is urban, whimsical, tangible, and fabled—a proper fusion of his roots. To Andrew, colors are the language of emotions. Considerably attracted to color combinations, his artworks are highly expressive of a carefully planned color scheme.

About Oliver Weiss

Oliver Weiss is a mixed-media artist from Berlin enjoying creating hand-cut paper collages and graffiti art. Earning significant influence from the early-twentieth-century Dadaism and Surrealism art movements, Oliver has worked in digital collage for two decades. Only recently, though, he transitioned to analog collage, a technique he rediscovered during the pandemic. So paper, scissors, glue, paint, and artifacts drawn by hand became his new creative activity.

I seek to extract hidden stories from such raw materials as pre-existing old photos, vintage and contemporary magazines, books, and postcards, by arranging bits and pieces until they start articulating a “voice.” Stories that didn’t have space beforehand now see the light of day; they needed first to be discovered by ways of composing works of art.

Oliver recently sent Hue&Eye an exclusive interview, and we are excited to publish it with this.

Hello Oliver. When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?

I guess I have always known but never dared until after completing my studies in engineering.

Can you briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art?

I primarily work with collage these days. I seek to find “hidden stories” when assembling bits and pieces.

Oliver Weiss Oliver Weiss Oliver Weiss

What is the main feature that has changed in your works or practice throughout the years?

My transgression to analog work after many years of working almost exclusively digitally.

Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?

Everything DADA. Motivation also comes from writing, playing the piano, walking through the city of Berlin…

Oliver Weiss Oliver Weiss Oliver Weiss

How would you like people to engage with your work?

Ideally, they can relate to my way of thinking. Or be surprised (but inspired) that someone thinks differently than they do.

Spread the word! Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

I will have my own studio soon, where I may create larger-scale images!

Overview | The Emerging Artists to Follow in 2022

Over the last two years, the world has seen artists exploit their talents for deeper topics. Indeed the pandemic was central, and themes such as human feelings, sustainability, and physical or mental health were at the core of artists’ conditions. This 2022 is the year of a back-to-normality state of mind, which is already visible in many recent works of painters, photographers, and illustrators worldwide.

Experts predict a return to figurative painting in 2022, thanks to several high-level representative exhibitions opening in museums across the world in the early months of the year and the need to take advantage of the emotional capabilities of painting post-pandemic.

Following is a selection curated by Hue&Eye listing the Top 10 Emerging Artists to Follow in 2022.

Camille Walala

Known for her ambitious, large-scale, and explosively colorful interventions in public spaces, Camille Walala uses the man-made landscape as a platform for disseminating positivity. Her work encompasses full-facade murals, immersive 3D installations, street art, interiors, and set design – characterized by a fusion of bold colors and playful geometric patterns. Since her ‘Dream Come True Building’ burst onto the Shoreditch streetscape in 2015 and thrust her into the spotlight, Camille and her creative producer, Julia Jomaa, have been engaged in an increasingly bold roster of international projects. These have included collaborations with leading global brands – such as LEGO, for whom she created the HOUSE OF DOTS; the creative direction of the groundbreaking Mauritian hotel SALT of Palmar; and a slew of major installations for events like NYC’s WantedDesign and London Design Festival – including Walala Lounge, as a complete suite of semi-permanent street furniture that transformed South Molton Street, Mayfair, into a corridor of color. Camille finds inspiration in community and collaboration, and the power of color and pattern to transform atmospheres, elevate moods, and spark positivity.

Mongezi Ncaphayi

Born in 1983 in Benoni, South Africa, Mongezi Ncaphayi lives and works in Cape Town. Mongezi Ncaphayi uses various materials to explore social questions of politics, power, and rampant inequities in his abstract paintings and prints. Ncaphayi’s work has won him numerous honors, including the prestigious Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award, the Africa First Art Prize, as well as residencies at the Thami Mnyele Foundation in Amsterdam, The Ampersand Foundation in New York, the Mixit Print Studio Boston, and the Nirox Foundation in Johannesburg, among others. His work is in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Thami Mnyele Foundation in Amsterdam, the Bibliothéque Nationale de France in Paris, France, the Ampersand Foundation in London, and the Luciano Benetton Foundation, in Treviso, Italy, among other institutions and private collections.

Xie Lei

Currently living and working in Paris, in his paintings, Xie Lei emphasizes ambiguity and sensory details to create environments for viewers to enter and explore. Often producing monochromatic works in a dark palette of mixed colors, Xie Lei can perhaps be best described as a symbolist painter. Ancient rituals, traditional Chinese imagery, or Western mythology form the subjects of many paintings. His work is included in public and private collections, such as Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne (MAC VAL) and Burger Collection. Notable solo exhibitions were staged at Yishu 8 Beijing, Galerie Anne de Villepoix Paris, Palais des Beaux-Arts Paris, Z Gallery Arts Vancouver. Besides, his works were included in group shows at MAC VAL, the Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration, Langen Foundation, and White Space. He exhibits in a solo presentation at artgenève, presented by the French gallery Semiose. He is also a 2022 artist-in-residence at the Boghossian Foundation in Brussels.

Deborah Segun

Born in 1994, Nigerian multidisciplinary artist Deborah Segun is garnering attention for her large-scale figurative works that celebrate the beauty and nuances of womanhood. With an intuitive gaze, Segun deconstructs traditional representations of women, reimagining the female figure using smooth, rich curves and exaggerated silhouettes that recall the modernist vocabulary of Cubism. Segun’s intimate portraits capture moments of joy and acceptance, evoking a sense of hope by employing fresh compositions and fluid strokes of blue and earth-tone acrylic.

Lefty Out There

Known for his polymorph designs, Lefty Out There is a pioneering multidisciplinary artist and illustrator. Lefty’s goal is to ‘cover everything.’ Launching his career as a street artist in Chicago, the artist’s current practice combines the craft of graffiti with technologically advanced processes like LED boxes, computers, and laser cutters. His ambitious murals and daring canvases have caught the attention of prestigious brands across the globe, including Nike, Adidas, Facebook, and Google.

Cooper

Born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, Andrew Cooper – now more widely known as Cooper – is an American visual artist. Emerging on the art scene in 2018, Cooper is a Los Angeles-based artist who paints nature-inspired canvases.

Cooper’s subject matter and vibrant style are the perfect antidotes to post-pandemic blues, with the art world taking a revived interest in figurative art. With physical art fairs and exhibitions seemingly returning to normal, there is no longer a need for art to be digital or geared towards digital consumption. Utilizing a diverse and vibrant palette, the vivid colors Cooper uses are reminiscent of 1990s post-Modernist pop, with the artist taking inspiration from David Hockney and Jonas Wood. Although only in his twenties, the artist has already exhibited in shows and art fairs across America, including Miami, New York, and Los Angeles.

Working in painting, installation, sound, and performance, Rachel Jones explores a sense of self as a visual, visceral experience. In her paintings, she grapples with the challenges of finding visual means to convey abstract, existential concepts. In depicting the psychological truths of being and the emotions these engender, abstraction becomes a way of expressing the intangible. The artist Rachel Jones has described her own work as an ‘exegesis of color’, and certainly, her work presents a vibrantly colorful palette of textured, abstract forms that collide with one another as a kaleidoscopic assemblage. Allowing form to take on a metaphorical role, her paintings use ‘motifs and color as a way to communicate ideas about the interiority of Black bodies and their lived experience’. Expressive, intricate, and pulsating with energy, the titles of her artworks – A Sliced ToothRed Shaped Mouths, and I’m Not So Clean – often reveal a wry connection with the corporeal.

Dorothy Sing Zhang

Dorothy Sing Zhang has always been interested in composite and constructed images. However, the emerging photographer’s photos are hard to describe; they appear suspended in enigmatic narratives that pause at tense moments. It makes sense that the evolution of Sing Zhang’s practice has involved filmmaking. She studied in Denmark, taught by Jørgen Leth, Lars Von Trier, and Thomas Vinterberg – while simultaneously developing her fine art background at the Slade in London, where she is currently based.

Hugo Yu

Inventive compositions of primary colors are the common thread throughout Hugo Yu‘s work. With a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Yu’s quickly created a recognizable visual language. While there is a structure to his practice that Yu connects to his upbringing in Shanghai, Yu leaves a playful openness for viewers’ interpretations, inspired by his current home in New York. In 2022, Yu took on a photographic marathon of creating portraits of ten architectural studios with exciting results. A recent addition to the emerging photographer’s practice is sculpture as a natural expansion of his clever still life sets.

Bettina Pittaluga

Bettina Pittaluga is a French-Uruguayan photographer currently based in Paris. A former sociology student with a background working as a reporter, Pittaluga’s interest in people is palpable in her portraits. She likes to think that she photographs beauty.

Her work essentially responds to the homogeneous representation of humanity that she sees in the media. She thinks it is an entirely unequal vision of the human race, the exact unequal representation that is mainly responsible for racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, and the rejection of old age. It is crucial for her to do everything to continue deconstructing this hegemony and committing to invoking all these fights.

What is Digital Graffiti?

Digital graffiti is a new way of creating graffiti using the computer system. Introduced in 2008, it has rapidly evolved and expanded over the past decade. Any large-scale art form inspired by this traditional medium comes under the umbrella of digital graffiti.

How does it work?

This art form makes use of particular aerosol cans. Instead of paint, these cans emit infrared radiation that is not visible to the naked eye. This radiation allows the technology behind it to work. The great advantage of infrared radiation technology is that there is no paint involved, and it avoids the hazards of paint smell and fumes.

Unlike other digital art forms, digital graffiti still uses physical elements and practical paint applications. Therefore, this is a hybrid technique that bridges both graffiti painting and digital artwork. These art forms are to be significant art trends in 2022 and beyond.

Creating digital graffiti is a work of art. The first step for many artists is to create a sketch or an outline of the design in mind. This sketch can help you make the first draft of your artwork using an online illustrator or photoshop. After that, you can create a 3D effect

What is a Digital Graffiti Wall?

Graffiti has always been a medium and a channel for people to express themselves. It allows them to display their thoughts, opinions, and personality without any filter. The digital graffiti wall is a contemporary version of the same traditional graffiti.

There have been marvelous artworks created to date, and the method continues to grow in popularity. Numerous artists have been pushing boundaries and have done fantastic work in this field. Some names worth mentioning are Helen Marshall, Jonathan McCabe, Luzena Adams, and many more.

What is AR graffiti?

More commonly known as AR graffiti, augmented reality graffiti allows graffiti artists to paint virtually without getting caught. Graffiti artists paint in augmented reality allowing artists to move past graffiti’s old reputation of vandalism.

AR graffiti is an example of the ever-deepening connection between technology graffiti and art. AR graffiti makes art more accessible through the internet. This builds on the founding belief that graffiti and street art are for the people and should be widely accessible.

The 3D nature of augmented reality graffiti allows artists and taggers to create their artworks on literally anything in a virtual world. Artists are no longer strictly limited to traditional surfaces.

Is it the same as crypto art?

Digital graffiti and AR graffiti are not the same as crypto art and NFTs. Digital graffiti is a computerized and virtual version of traditional graffiti art, while crypto art is a storage and sales method. On the other hand, it is possible to sell digital art through cryptocurrencies.

Coming from a background in graffiti, Scott has always seen his artistic carrier as an attempt to experiment and break boundaries. As a matter of fact, he tries multiple mediums to obtain more “happy incidents” in his process. Indeed beyond an overly polished product, is the attempt to explore the conceptual side of art by juxtaposing materials and techniques, to express his renewed spontaneous outlook. His attempt is to cause a reaction and to be edgy, so as to stand out with a nonconventional artistic approach.

CURRENT WORKS

Today Scott is a skilled artist that found success with various commissioned projects relating to public and corporate art ventured. He also conveyed brand images such as Nike, Microsoft, VANOC, and the City of Vancouver.

Scott currently works out of his studio in DTES in Vancouver BC as a freelance artist and graphic designer. He showcases his works on an international level, aspiring to grow in the graffiti art world and further his technique and process.
