About Oliver Marsden

Oliver Marsden was born in the UK in 1973. His artistic practice revolves around perception, the possibilities of movement, and the fluidity of color, sound, and order. Marsden explores the behavior and properties of paint, creating pulsations and echoes of color. Marsden has a formal grounding in geometry that often corresponds to the forms of periodic oscillations, such as the vibrations of simple sounds, like that which a tuning fork can produce.

Oliver Marsden has participated in over 60 group exhibitions in places such as Vigo Gallery, Dubai, UAE (201/); Maddox Gallery London (2017), Kresge Art Museum, Michigan, USA (2010), and held solo exhibitions at venues like Vigo/Liaigre Gallery, London, UK (2020); Galería Hilario Galguera, Mexico City, Mexico (2015), and Koumi Machi Kougen Museum, Koumi, Japan (2009), among others. He has received prestigious awards and recognitions, including the Prince’s Trust Award in England in 2000 and The Arthur Anderson Prize for Best Young Artist, Scotland in 1995. His work is part of important collections around the world, such as the Jumex Foundation, Mexico, and the Horiuchi Collection, Japan, among others.

About the Exhibition ‘All We Have Is Now’ by Oliver Marsden

September 12th – November 8th, 2024

Galería Hilario Galguera Madrid is pleased to present the exhibition All We Have is Now, by British artist Oliver Marsden. Through his most emblematic series, the exhibition explores different concepts of synergy between the human condition, technology, and nature from our perceptual capacity. Memory, energy, sound, and spirituality are optimized in minimalist paintings that reflect a universal contemplative understanding.

Expanding the cross-border reach of Marsden’s pictorial language, the exhibition will be presented simultaneously at our Mexico City location, and it will also open in September.

A hypnotic sensation permeates the gallery space. Despite the silence and stillness, circular paintings from different series convey a sense of movement, perhaps evoking their origin: an analysis of the impact of sound on water and the materiality of sound waves led to the creation of the Harmonics series, which later evolved into the OM Halo and Stella series. Even during their creation, the artist remains almost motionless while the paintings rotate on their own to absorb oil or acrylic. The Spiral Void series explores the emptiness that has been studied throughout history in philosophy and art. The circles in the series seem to turn into mirrors, reflecting the doubts and thoughts of each individual.

These series create a phenomenon the artist calls a perceptual leap, where the sense of depth is lost, and the viewer feels as if they are inside the painting, in a meditative field. The reduction of the painting to seemingly simple elements and forms is an attempt by the artist to investigate a universal truth when halos and aureoles of saints and Buddhas can be interpreted, but also the displacement of energy in the form of light and sound.

The Grid series examines reality through sacred geometry with meticulously painted grids in acrylic. Inspired by the geometric structures found in nature and the cosmos, these works aim to reveal the order and harmony hidden in the apparent chaos of the contemporary world.

Similarly, the Fade series offers an escape from the disorder and oversaturation of today’s urbanity. Its faded colors are ghosts of the way the artist stores memories in his mind. Memories of family moments, the movement and feeling of air, sunsets, sunrises, or fog, the artist captures specific moments with gradient tones, seeking to replicate the sensation of each experience, turning a unique experience into universal feelings.

All We Have is Now invites us to lose ourselves for a moment in the present, capturing our gaze and captivating us with a language that transcends cultural differences to offer an introspective space for reflection and peace. Marsden’s work comes as a much-needed breath before our return to everyday life.

The exhibition will open at Galería Hilario Galguera Madrid on September 12th and remain open to the public until November 8th, 2024.

After years of refining his craft in Nigeria, he moved to Kazakhstan, where he continued to explore various creative avenues while teaching and working in other artistic roles.

UART aspires to bolster Ukrainian culture and art amidst these challenging circumstances while engaging the global creative community in this endeavor.

The occasion will be underscored by a charitable initiative during the celebratory concert featuring luminaries from the Ukrainian entertainment sphere. Through this collective effort, they aim to extend support to one of Ukraine’s humanitarian missions.

About the Jove Wangs’ Exhibition ‘Spirit of the American West’

Pasadena, California. American Legacy Fine Arts presentJove Wang: Spirit of the American West”, a solo exhibition of landscapes and figures, on view from October 18 to November 16, 2024. The display showcases more than 20 new works by Jove Wang.

Gallery Director Elaine Adams comments about the exhibition: Jove Wang’sSpirit of the American West’ is more than an exhibition; it is a bridge between two worlds, illustrating how the artist’s early life experiences on the Mongolian steppes of Jilin, China, has shaped his perception and artistic interpretation of his current life in the American West. His paintings invite viewers to appreciate the beauty and majesty of these landscapes while reflecting on the shared human experiences that connect diverse cultures and geographies.

Through this exhibition, Wang not only honors his past but also enriches our understanding of the intricate ties between land, culture, and identity.

About Jove Wang

Jove Wang was born in China. As a youth, at age seven he apprenticed with the master painter Gang Gu, subsequently
studying at Jilin School of Art for three years and graduating in 1982. In 1984 he was accepted into the most prestigious
art institute of China, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now named the China Academy of Art) and graduated as an
honor student in 1988. He also received professional training from the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts.

Wang’s childhood in the vast, open steppes of Inner Mongolia instilled in him a deep appreciation for expansive landscapes and the rugged beauty of untamed nature. These formative years in the rolling plains, grazing livestock, and the tribal nomadic lifestyle, profoundly influenced his artistic vision. The simplicity and grandeur of the Inner Mongolian environment, along with their renowned horse culture, also known asMongolian Cowboys,is mirrored in Wang’s dynamic compositions of life in the American West.

Jove Wang’s subjects evoke a timeless spirit of the American West, which is further accentuated by his sweeping brushwork and vivid palette. Through his art, Wang conveys not only the physical attributes of the landscape but also the spirit of adventure, resilience, and freedom that defines the American West.”

It’s a private event promoting contemporary fine art, to give visibility to artists by fostering their creative production and giving art amateurs, collectors, and galleries a vast content intake.

Tartget is an exclusive online contest of the duration of twelve months of artistic connection and production. Its core is an international painting competition that ends with an award ceremony gala and a collective exhibition in Madrid. It translates into a whole year of social media coverage by showcasing all the artists joining the competition, and operating as a business card for participating artists.

Dates, Deadlines and How to Apply

The launch and flagship event is set for the spring of 2024. Beyond the competition, the organization will promote other events, collaborate with associations, art schools, and artist residencies, and be dedicated to encouraging the momentum of artists and their creations.

TARTGET Painting Prize arises as an international window through which emerging creators, enthusiasts, professionals, or established artists have the chance to present their works on a widely broadcast platform and, consequently, establish a presence in the market.

Their works will be examined and fairly evaluated by reputable members of the jury and considered for their agendas by collectors of proven prestige. One of these, as mentioned above, will be the “Hue&Eye prize”.

TARTGET Painting Prize’s website provides a space where artists can create their profiles and register their works. They just need to photograph their works (up to three images maximum) and attach the files in JPG format.

The entry fee for participating in one work is €50, and from the second work onwards, the price is reduced to €30.

In the young artist category, prices are €35 for the first work and €15 for each additional work.

The registration period ends on March 10, 2025. Then, a prestigious international jury formed by painters, curators, collectors, and gallery owners from five continents will select the 200 finalist works.

The organization, with the advice of the jury, will decide which finalist works will be featured in the final exhibition, at the prestigious Ateneo de Madrid, where another physical jury composed of renowned painters from the global art and culture scene will award the main prizes included in the competition rules.

Around 50 paintings will be selected for the exhibition at the Ateneo de Madrid, which will be inaugurated on June 5 and will remain open until the 12th.

Awards and Visibility

One of the great attractions of TARTGET is the visibility that Madrid will give to the artists. No other city brings together three of the world’s most outstanding art galleries in so few meters; and the final exhibition will be located in that golden mile of art, a five-minute walk from the Prado Museum. The exhibition will attract the attention of a substantial audience after the works are revealed in a preview for collectors, sponsors, and entrepreneurs, so they can be acquired.

Of course, the other great value of TARGET is the unparalleled number of prizes it awards.

More than €40,000 in cash will be distributed among the winners, divided into four main prizes (€12,000 for first place, €6,000 for second place, €4,000 for third place, and €4,000 for the Target Fusion prize), ten additional prizes of €500 each for the first place in each category, and acquisition prizes exceeding €10,000.

Furthermore, more than forty awards in art materials, training, and promotion valued at over €10,000 will be given out. In total, more than €50,000 in prizes make this competition one of the most important in the world.

The award ceremony will be attended by personalities from the art world, culture, sports, and politics, in addition to numerous media outlets. A unique opportunity to open the doors to success.

In total, there will be 22 cash prizes, including an award for the best work by an artist under 25 years old.

The organization will also reward winners with a one-week residency at the MAA (Madrid Academy of ART), various recognitions with fine arts materials, and promotion in international art magazines.

The Hue&Eye Award

The prize will consist of a journalistic article for the winner, to be featured in Hue & Eye magazine, valued at €200.

All finalist painters will be eligible for this prize, regardless of the category in which they participated, and even if they are not selected for the final exhibition.

London Design Festival celebrates and promotes the city as a design capital on the global stage.

The next edition will take place on 16–24 September 2023.

London Design Festival was launched by Sir John Sorrell CBE and Ben Evans CBE in 2003. It aims to deliver a celebration of design by creating an annual event to draw in the country’s greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers, and educators.

Step Into Sony Design’s New Virtual Reality

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, London Design Festival now moves into a new decade, celebrating how it has played a key role in the growth of the design industry. It bolsters London’s position as a global destination for business, culture, and tourism. The LDF contributes to the UK’s reputation as a creative powerhouse as one of the world’s leading design events. Also, the Festival served as the blueprint for design weeks and festivals globally and continues to be a key moment on the cultural calendar.

“London and Design go hand in hand. It is part of our story. LDF is a platform for hundreds of design stories to be told. Each of them talks to an expanding audience hungry for design ideas and enjoying the quality and diversity of what’s on offer. It all confirms London’s status as the global center of design.” – Ben Evans CBE.

Shows at galleries in Zurich and Basel in June 9-11, 2023

June is an artistic highlight of the year in Switzerland, with Zurich Art Weekend taking place from June 9–11, followed the next weekend by Art Basel. For their last shows before the traditional summer break, galleries in these two cities are putting up much-anticipated exhibitions featuring internationally acclaimed artists. Here are six shows that should not be missed in Zurich and Basel during this busy month.

Tschabalala Self, ‘Spaces and Places’

Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Waldmannstrasse, Zurich

June 9 – July 22, 2023

American artist Tschabalala Self works across multiple media, but she is particularly known for her large-scale works on canvas in which she mixes painting with found pieces of fabric to depict Black figures, often in domestic contexts. For her second exhibition at Galerie Eva Presenhuber, she presents new works from her ‘Leisure Painting Series’ (2022–ongoing), which questions the home as a safe space from a point of view anchored in the experience of Black Americans. For those traveling through Switzerland, Self’s paintings and sculptures are also on view through June 18 in her solo exhibition ‘Inside Out’ at Kunstmuseum St. Gallen.

Andrea Büttner, ‘Before the Wind’

Galerie Tschudi, Zurich

June 3 – July 29, 2023

In parallel to her ongoing exhibition at Kunstmuseum Basel, acclaimed German artist Andrea Büttner is opening a solo show at Galerie Tschudi’s Zurich location. Büttner is known for her creations that often draw on art historical references to reflect on the way our visual and material culture is conditioned by predetermined social and spiritual frameworks. ‘Before the Wind’ features new and existing works, including a selection of her well-known woodcuts, but the highlight of the show is located on the gallery’s ceiling: Here, Büttner is presenting an in-situ installation consisting of multiple painted panels.

Paul Mpagi Sepuya, ‘Push/Pull’

Galerie Peter Kilchmann, Zahnradstrasse, Zurich

June 9 – July 28, 2023

American artist and photographer Paul Mpagi Sepuya is having two concurrent exhibitions with Galerie Peter Kilchmann in Zurich and Paris, in which he presents recent works, including from his series ‘Daylight Studio/Dark Room Studio’ (2021–ongoing). With this series, the artist freely reinterprets the late-19th- and early-20th-century practice of studio photography by infusing it with a contemporary comment on queer desire and Black subjectivity. In the context of Zurich Art Weekend, the gallery will host a conversation between the artist and curator Raphael Gygax on June 11. Also worth noting is an exhibition of new works by the Iranian Swiss-based photographer Shirana Shahbazi at the gallery’s second Zurich location on Rämistrasse.
