Martin’s work evolves from a fusion of collage, silkscreen, paint, photocopies, and digital techniques. He works from a vast archive of found and self-generated material and also works with stock and supplied imagery.

Years of experimentation have resulted in a unique style and brand image.

Martin works from his studio, Cut it Out, a space he owns since 2003 together with his creative partner Jackiem Parsons. They moved from London’s Kentish Town to St Leonard’s on Sea some 60k south of the capital and set up a Studio on the coast.

Graham Rawle On Martin O’Neill

Graham Rawle is a writer, artist, and designer. He has produced regular series which include ‘Lying Doggo’ and ‘Graham Rawle’s Wonder Quiz’ for The Observer and ‘When Words Collide’ and ‘Pardon Mrs. Arden’ for The Sunday Telegraph Magazine and ‘Bright Ideas’ for The Times. He is a Visiting Professor in Illustration at the Norwich University of the Arts where in 2012 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for services to design. He lives in London.

To this extent, these of the recent words of Graham Rowle on Martin O’Neill.

“As an avid scavenger of ephemera, Martin O’Neill’s glorious compositions begin long before he assembles them as images. He seems to carry these found treasures in his head while the stowed physical pieces lie dormant in an erratic filing system of studio file drawers (…) until the right moment comes along.”

“Because he sees the inherent value in every tiny piece, he develops a unique relationship with his archive. This makes all the difference when he brings everything together in an image because we feel what he feels; his passion is infectious. “

And he will continue. “Working intuitively allows him to spot potential combinations, recognizing and then capitalizing on serendipity and the element of chance. While the final choices are informed by assiduously honed design skills.

“He has an enviable sense of composition, balancing shape, color, line, texture, and type with a precision that makes it all seem effortless. You have to have a really good eye to do all that. And Martin O’Neill has the best. He is a true master of collage.” Graham Rawle. June 2019

Martin’s capability relies on being an international contemporary illustrator by keeping his old school technique his strong point of recognition.

About Otto Baum

Otto Baum (b. 1979, East Berlin) studied textile and surface design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, and now lives and works in Berlin.

He is currently creating stunning videos of himself making murals, usually large format, geometric and monochromatic while testing his latest OttoTools. OttoTools are his investigation of trying out various everyday tools for large-format painting mediums. He usually uses wooden slats, a few brushes, and screws and combines them into a new painting tool.

Hand lettering and abstract painting

Otto holds multiple accounts for his art practice, ranging from prints to objects to murals and letterforms. He calls a project of much of his hand lettering work “Wallphabets,” a hybrid of alphabets written directly onto walls. For him, it’s about the craft itself, the shape of the letters, and transferring them analogously to the wall, so he practices his skills with the brush to draw these beautiful writings by hand.

Baum is fascinated by simple forms, the feel, and the structure of materials such as wood and paper. He is interested in how unpredictable analog printing techniques such as linocuts or monotypes can be.

About Soo-Jin Lee

Soo-Jin Lee (SooJin) is an independent Graphic Designer from Seoul, South Korea. She lived in the US for five years studying at the California Institute of the Arts, where she gained a BFA in Graphic Design in 2016.

SooJin likes to explore digital arts, and her technique keens towards both digital and physical experiences. But let’s better understand what this means. She mainly uses Adobe Illustrator and sometimes Photoshop to finalize her artworks. Currently, she is also studying the idea to deepen cinema4D for 3D object elements to create better digital experiences.

Hello Soojin, Where have you grown up?

I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. I lived in America for 5 years, a mix of college and work.

Can you please provide a brief description of what you do or some information about your technique?

I usually use Adobe Illustrator and sometimes Photoshop. But off late, I am trying to also work with Cinema4D for 3d object elements to create better digital experiences.

What inspires you to create art?

I wanted to reimagine our surroundings and approach them with an anti-capitalist lens.

This was the reason I started the self-initiated project, Replica. The idea behind the project was that signs, labels and banners from mundane life can be reinterpreted, and made into memes (partially) through mischievous visual alterations.

How is your day-to-day working process?

Currently, I am working as a freelance designer. The scope of my work is kinda varied from

marketing to illustration for various brands. The marketing aspect, usually includes creating a business pitch deck and social media collaterals. Occasionally, I work on web or app design.

How long have you been working in this field?

I have been working as a freelance designer after a few internships during academic and graduation. So it has been about 3 years.

Which artists have had the greatest influence on your work?

I would love to choose Tim and Eric, an American comedy duo and creators. They inspired me with their absurdist sense of humor and satire and retro aesthetic on their shows they have created.

What inspires your practice outside of visual arts?

Weirdly, I get inspired by street and building signs and ads. And sometimes memes using these signs and symbols. I get an idea and create a design piece from them by visualizing with a bit of nihilism and a sarcastic view.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I want viewers to feel intrigued by my work, finding similarness and differences from their

daily objects. And at the same time, I hope they induce conflict with what they used to seeing.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I wish to grow and develop myself more as an independent and multidisciplinary designer.

So I hope to deliver and create digital and physical interactive experiences.

About Marta Veludo

Amsterdam-based Marta Veludo (originally from Lisbon, Portugal) is an art director, graphic designer, and illustrator well-known for being inspired by pop culture and folk art. Her artworks have a significant influence from colors, movements, and compositions for both cultural and commercial fields, all in the wake of engaging experiences.

Marta can combine different disciplines and mediums, stretching from brand communication to visual identity and printed materials, all in a digital realm or on a three- dimensional scale.

Veludo’s Motto: Fun and Play

Her motto is ‘fun and play’, as her first memories of creativity date back to when she was around five years old, in the era in which her fingers got dirty from painting and drawing with any possible color. She spent hours building up exhibitions in her grandmother’s kitchen.

After high school, she studied sculpture at The Fine Arts department of the Fine Arts Uni in Lisbon, to soon realize she wanted something more ‘visual.’ That’s how she started engaging with posters to end up with a BA in Graphic Design.

Then Veludo soon moved to Barcelona for an MA at Elisava, where she found her first work experience at No-Domain studio.

Veludo finally ended up in Amsterdam to work for Matte Studio, where she designed both cultural and retail fields. Soon she decided to bring this creative job and passion to the next level and launch a studio of her own.

Neville Brody is an English graphic designer, typographer, and art director. His work is today highly recognized worldwide.

He is mainly recognized for his record cover designs in the British independent music scene in the early 1980s.

As the Art Director of Fetish Records, he began experimenting with a new visual language that consisted of a mixture of visual and architectural elements.

Later, he puts these ideas into practice and sets new precedents through the innovative styling of The Face Magazine.

About Zim&Zou

French duo Zim&Zou create paper art installations for a wide range of international clients such as Microsoft, ICON,Hermès, TIME, Washington Post, ENI, Der Spiegel, La Rinascente e il Centre Pompidou.

Zim&Zou is a young duo composed of Lucie Thomas (b. 1987) and Thibaut Zimmermann (b. 1986). They both started as graphic designers, working in publishing and advertising. After a few years, they focused on installations using handcrafted objects made out of paper, wood, threads, etc.

Their favorite material is the paper they’re manipulating to give rise to intricate and colorful sculptures. Paper inspires them for its versatility, infinite range of colors and unique textures. The flat paper sheets turned into volume are giving an installation the poetry of ephemeral material.
Zim&Zou’s strength is to be a complementary and polyvalent duo.

Work Process

All of Zim&Zou’s works are not computer design based but handcrafted! Their favorite material is paper, which they cut, fold, glue to create colorful sculptures.

Paper is the most versatile of mediums to them, as for its unique colors and textures. The final artwork is an installation rich in poetry and shapes of any complexity. Their visual style focuses on exciting and whimsical scenes. Colorful buildings, giant flowers, and vegetation, natural landscapes are filled with huge seafood to become the main characters of their creations.  ‘Life is everywhere; flowers are growing and carry away its inhabitants in their impetus. The mysterious people are evolving, building, and living right in the heart of nature, revealing a fragment of their daily life.’

MUSEUM OF SUPERNATURAL HISTORY – Artist Windows for Hermès Maison Shanghai.

The concept is inspired by a Museum of Natural History, melted with a Cabinet of Curiosities. The windows, hand-made with paper and leather, are an invitation to wander. Passers-by were suddenly walking through the corridors of a mysterious Museum, straight from the street. The themes take impulse from nature; the two main windows are about Air and Water, and the two smaller ones around Earth. All the animals are carefully handcrafted using leather offcuts from Hermès workshops in Paris. In the water-themed window, a 5 meters dinosaur paper skull is swimming through the room (plesiosaurus skull)—the whole project required almost three months of work and a great local team’s support.

About Vasjen Katro

Albanian visual designer Vasjen Katro likes challenges, so he took one named Baugasm. This beautiful ambition is about designing a poster every 365 days of the year. The posters are published daily on his Instagram account, a true visual delight. You won’t be able to stop scrolling.

Katro came to graphic design through music. He was an electronic music producer years ago, and when he signed his first contract with the label, he just wanted to create by himself the artwork for his first EP. At that time, he was into photography and knew about image manipulation, but that was the first time he explored graphic design on a real product.

Today Vasjen Katr doesn’t limit himself to digital tools; he also enjoys using acrylic paint to create patterns and textures for his posters – as you can see in this tutorials.

BAUGASM: A-POSTER-A-DAY

With his most renowned project Bauguasm, Katro wanted to challenge himself to create something new every day, without cheating. He continued designing posters also while in the hospital (with the help of painkillers) recovering from two broken ribs. Creating posters allowed him to explore the vast potential of tools like Photoshop (his favorite), Illustrator, and Cinema 4D.  “Combining different software is the best thing ever because you have unlimited tools to play with and possible combinations.”, he says.

Katro likes to tell everyone that his poster-a-day project started as a crazy idea, but ended up being so much more.

6 Tips To Learn How to Price Your Art and Start Selling Your Work

It might be your first attempt as an artist, or you might feel quite fulfilled. In both cases, pricing your work can be highly problematic. We have gathered six quick tips for you to ease the process and stop feeling guilty or humble. After all, who sets the rules to define whether you’re worth 10 or 100? The market does. So grab a pen and follow a rational scheme to start selling your artwork reasonably. And feel free to adjust calculations during your journey!

  1. Research how similar artists price their art

To reasonably price your art, and before making up your idea of how a market works, do your research. Trends change continuously, and one of the best ways to keep on track is to study what works for others. Be realistic by selecting a few artists you consider similar or relevant to your approach and value their accomplishments, experiences, geographic locations, and production rate. You might also think of directly get in touch with them to share opinions!

how to price your art

SPECIAL TIP: SEARCH FOR AN ADVISOR TO HELP YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS

Artists are used to feeling lonely not only in their creative process but also in learning how to expand their network and visibility and to value their artworks. There are platforms dedicated to assisting emerging artists especially. Our suggestion is st-Art, an Amsterdam based community of curators and contributors with the aim of nurturing artists worldwide by providing valid options for developing their skill to divulge their works and sell them to buyers.

Get in touch or register here.

  1. Don’t vary the price for sales in studio or through a gallery

Use an actual or similar rate for selling both in your studio and a gallery. These last won’t appreciate your competition and will ultimately spread the word to other galleries about how you are trying to sell it at a better price by yourself. Its real galleries charge quite a lot, although they guarantee to deliver a professional job.

how to price your art

  1. Balance Your Emotions

Being proud of your work, or underestimating your art, is part of being an artist. It’s easy to get attached, knowing the emotions and effort you usually spend on a piece. A buyer won’t have time to listen to your emotional stories; you should base pricing your work on physical attributes. If you feel close to a specific artwork and think its final price is unfair, consider keeping it off the market and in your private collection.

how to price your art

  1. Stand by your final price

Once you and your advisors have set a final price, stand by it. When you take the time and effort to research and price your work realistically, you will feel confident to state your amount firmly. On their hand, buyers might try hard to negotiate it, but they will even start estimating you as an artist who knows its way. Confidence does wonders.

how to price your art

  1. Remember these formulas:

# 1 – Value your work according to your reputation

The most common formula used by established contemporary artists is very transparent. Multiply the width of the work by the length. Next, multiply the result by a reasonable amount that makes sense for your reputation and credential, and round it to the nearest hundred. Finally, double the cost of your materials and add them to the square inch amount in money.

Do this if you account for the 50% commission rate galleries usually take to sell your work.

Emerging artists should start at affordable rates of 2,5-3,5 € /3-4 $, and higher as they become more established.

If the painting is small – which often means the effort was the same as for a bigger one – you may consider a slightly higher rate and the opposite with a large-scale work.

Example:

  • 18 in x 24 in = 432 sq. Inches
  • 432 x 3,5 € = 1.512 € / Rounded to 1.500 €
  • 100 € (cost of materials) x 2 = 200 €
  • 1.500 € x 200 € = 1.700 €

# 2: Value your work according to your time and effort

This formula covers the time you work and the cost of your materials. It is beneficial for artists that are starting out selling their work. When valuing an hourly rate, compare what similar artists charge for their art. If the result is too high compared to theirs, we suggest you lower it. Double the cost of your materials if you are selling through galleries.

Example:

  • Hourly rate: 20 €
  • Total hours: 15 hours
  • Cost of materials: 100 €
  • 20 € x15 hrs =300 €
  • 300 € +(100 x 2) € = 500 €

The Hybrid Minds project swiftly found its collector in the NFT ecosystem with its first edition and keeps on evolving with the participation of artists all over the world. The project’s new collaboration, “Crimson Fumes,” is about the story of a character coming from the fantasy worlds created by Reza Afshar.

For its first collaboration in the NFT universe, KAFT combines the brand culture and the creative process in the digital and physical world.

NFTs emerged in parallel with the digital evolution and have recently been used by many artists worldwide to present their works. It represents the existence of artworks in the digital universe while also creating a unique, original signature for the owner.
