About David Samuel Stern

David Samuel Stern was born in 1982 in Highland Park, a suburban city in Lake County (IL, USA). He got an MFA at the Washington University in 2006 and now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

As a child, he didn’t think about art much until taking a darkroom-photography course during a high-school summer break. From that moment on, thanks to that summer course and once learned the medium, David began to take art seriously.

Work

His latest work, Woven Portraits 2020, is the result of photographic prints on translucent vellum. David physically cut and weaved together by hand two portraits of the same person. He then merges them into one another to create an exciting pattern and incredible texture. Finally, carefully cuts them apart. The attempt he aims at by doing this is to give portraits a sort of abstraction to allow the subjects to hide within themselves. He indeed states on his website: “In hiding something we reveal others.” Also, to David, the process of making something is as necessary as the thing itself.

Technique

Each piece of the Woven Portrait series is a physically unique and one-of-a-kind portrait. The photographs, all taken in a lighting studio and printed on vellum, are all large-scale prints.

The palette of light and the delicate contrasts maximize the effect of overlapping two sides of a human being. By doing this, David generates two different emotions. The portraits are caught in one mid-motion, a mix of two attempts of an action.

David transforms the photographic prints by creating a painterly atmosphere. His method is simple yet powerful. However, the abstraction of his work hides elements and details of the portraits as well.

David features in several creative international magazines and has already exhibited both in various solo and group shows.

Martin’s work evolves from a fusion of collage, silkscreen, paint, photocopies, and digital techniques. He works from a vast archive of found and self-generated material and also works with stock and supplied imagery.

Years of experimentation have resulted in a unique style and brand image.

Martin works from his studio, Cut it Out, a space he owns since 2003 together with his creative partner Jackiem Parsons. They moved from London’s Kentish Town to St Leonard’s on Sea some 60k south of the capital and set up a Studio on the coast.

Graham Rawle On Martin O’Neill

Graham Rawle is a writer, artist, and designer. He has produced regular series which include ‘Lying Doggo’ and ‘Graham Rawle’s Wonder Quiz’ for The Observer and ‘When Words Collide’ and ‘Pardon Mrs. Arden’ for The Sunday Telegraph Magazine and ‘Bright Ideas’ for The Times. He is a Visiting Professor in Illustration at the Norwich University of the Arts where in 2012 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for services to design. He lives in London.

To this extent, these of the recent words of Graham Rowle on Martin O’Neill.

“As an avid scavenger of ephemera, Martin O’Neill’s glorious compositions begin long before he assembles them as images. He seems to carry these found treasures in his head while the stowed physical pieces lie dormant in an erratic filing system of studio file drawers (…) until the right moment comes along.”

“Because he sees the inherent value in every tiny piece, he develops a unique relationship with his archive. This makes all the difference when he brings everything together in an image because we feel what he feels; his passion is infectious. “

And he will continue. “Working intuitively allows him to spot potential combinations, recognizing and then capitalizing on serendipity and the element of chance. While the final choices are informed by assiduously honed design skills.

“He has an enviable sense of composition, balancing shape, color, line, texture, and type with a precision that makes it all seem effortless. You have to have a really good eye to do all that. And Martin O’Neill has the best. He is a true master of collage.” Graham Rawle. June 2019

Martin’s capability relies on being an international contemporary illustrator by keeping his old school technique his strong point of recognition.

About Marta Veludo

Amsterdam-based Marta Veludo (originally from Lisbon, Portugal) is an art director, graphic designer, and illustrator well-known for being inspired by pop culture and folk art. Her artworks have a significant influence from colors, movements, and compositions for both cultural and commercial fields, all in the wake of engaging experiences.

Marta can combine different disciplines and mediums, stretching from brand communication to visual identity and printed materials, all in a digital realm or on a three- dimensional scale.

Veludo’s Motto: Fun and Play

Her motto is ‘fun and play’, as her first memories of creativity date back to when she was around five years old, in the era in which her fingers got dirty from painting and drawing with any possible color. She spent hours building up exhibitions in her grandmother’s kitchen.

After high school, she studied sculpture at The Fine Arts department of the Fine Arts Uni in Lisbon, to soon realize she wanted something more ‘visual.’ That’s how she started engaging with posters to end up with a BA in Graphic Design.

Then Veludo soon moved to Barcelona for an MA at Elisava, where she found her first work experience at No-Domain studio.

Veludo finally ended up in Amsterdam to work for Matte Studio, where she designed both cultural and retail fields. Soon she decided to bring this creative job and passion to the next level and launch a studio of her own.

Who is Neville Brody?

Neville Brody is an English graphic designer, typographer, and art director. His work is today highly recognized worldwide.

He is mainly recognized for his record cover designs in the British independent music scene in the early 1980s.

As the Art Director of Fetish Records, he began experimenting with a new visual language that consisted of a mixture of visual and architectural elements.

Later, he puts these ideas into practice and sets new precedents through the innovative styling of The Face Magazine.

Brody’s artistic contribution to The Face revolutionizes how designers and readers approach the medium.

By designing his typefaces, in fact, he opens the way for the advent of digital type design.

In 1990 he found the FontFont typeface library together with Erik Spiekermann.

With FUSE, an interactive magazine and collection of experimental typefaces and posters, he challenges the boundaries between typography and graphic design.

Today, Neville Brody’s work focuses mainly on electronic communications design, and because of his unique and striking digital typefaces, his contributions to the world of graphic design and digital typography are invaluable.

As often referred to as a “star typographer”, Brody has designed several very well-known typefaces. Mostly, unique fonts include the updated font for the Times newspaper, Times ModernNew Deal as used in publicity material, and titles for the film Public Enemies and Industria.

About Vasjen Katro

Albanian visual designer Vasjen Katro likes challenges, so he took one named Baugasm. This beautiful ambition is about designing a poster every 365 days of the year. The posters are published daily on his Instagram account, a true visual delight. You won’t be able to stop scrolling.

Katro came to graphic design through music. He was an electronic music producer years ago, and when he signed his first contract with the label, he just wanted to create by himself the artwork for his first EP. At that time, he was into photography and knew about image manipulation, but that was the first time he explored graphic design on a real product.

Today Vasjen Katr doesn’t limit himself to digital tools; he also enjoys using acrylic paint to create patterns and textures for his posters – as you can see in this tutorials.

BAUGASM: A-POSTER-A-DAY

With his most renowned project Bauguasm, Katro wanted to challenge himself to create something new every day, without cheating. He continued designing posters also while in the hospital (with the help of painkillers) recovering from two broken ribs. Creating posters allowed him to explore the vast potential of tools like Photoshop (his favorite), Illustrator, and Cinema 4D.  “Combining different software is the best thing ever because you have unlimited tools to play with and possible combinations.”, he says.

Katro likes to tell everyone that his poster-a-day project started as a crazy idea, but ended up being so much more.

About Natalia Lvova

Natalia Lvova is an artist from Tyumen (Russia), based in Palo Alto (California). She owns more than 200 paintings throughout her artistic career. Known for her effective use of vibrant colors, unusual visual schemes, and patterns in creating original masterpieces hailed by art enthusiasts of every generation. Distinctly, Natalia holds a license for her unique painting technique, which she has aptly named “TwiddleART.”

Art Practice

Lvova explains in her artist statement, “I love order, for example everything is perfect in my wardrobes. As every business has its protocol, and I plan every day of mine, my TwiddleART style was born probably due to this. Curls and spirals are my way to balance the chaos, to relax and meditate. I love painting on huge canvases, and although their size is difficult to move, I believe it helps me dive inside of them.”, she says.

Further, she participated in several fashion collections featuring her distinctive art. She also illustrated BukvaBuk, an educational art book aimed at developing abstract thinking for children, endorsed by the Department of Education in Tyumen city, Russia.

Natalia has presented her unique artworks at some solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Russia, and France, including Unauthorized SFMOMA Show #27 (San Francisco, California 2017), ArtSpan (San Francisco, California 2017), Palace of Fine Arts (San Francisco, California 2016).

Teaching

In addition to displaying her distinctive art in worldwide exhibitions, Natalia presents many masterclasses, seminars, and workshops.

These include “Everyone is an Artist in One’s Soul” and the program “An Artist Who Sells” to help peer artists learn how to hold exhibitions and successfully build a professional career as an artist.

The artists’ heritage is critical, depicting the present in my artworks, talking about the things that touch me. It’s crucial that a painting balances the mind, providing an inspiring charge of energy and contributing to meditation.

About Leo Ureña

Leo Ureña is a Costa Rican photographer, graphic designer, and publisher. The series Squares Within Squares depicts his mixed creative genres, as the images are composed of photographs from different periods and locations. The shoots are between New York, San Josè in Costa Rica, and Mexico City.

The Squares Within Squares series alters the way we see things as the images themselves become frames. Ureña started shooting with his smartphone about six years ago. It all started more as a curiosity for the visual and as a means of communicating with friends who were away.

As time passed by, he discovered that his passion for photography was growing as he continued to focus on light and composition.

“I focused on how the light was or how a certain composition could redefine what I was seeing and trying to elude subjects.”, he says.

The series of collages was firstly inspired by Ureña’s practice of editing and photographing. By the thought that combining various images, he could build creative language to depict complex situations visually.

It was all done very intuitively with the primary purpose of going further with the exploration of the possibilities you get from photography”, Leo Ureña says.

About Elias Klingen

Elias Klingen is 28 years old and from Stockholm, Sweden. Elias explains how, being digital art his biggest passion in life, he will dedicate most of his time to learning new software and techniques.

Elias’s work has a strong composition and a sharp eye for details due to his curious attitude to focus on new skills.

After working for the Stockholm-based production company Rebels Studios and an internship at SNASK, Klingen is now a full-time freelance artist whose clients involve IKEA, Samsung, Absolut Vodka, and Volvo, to mention a few. His digital ability to manipulate real-life objects also made his artworks fit in photorealism.

Style and Technique

Rich in detail and full of dramatic lights, Elias’s artworks have commercial and glossy appeal. Additionally, Klingen says:” I get a huge adrenalin rush when I’m creating something that I’m proud of. Simple as that. My life concentrates on my passion for 3D and illustration. Indeed It’s the first thing I think about when I wake up.”

Largely inspired by Adolf Lachman and Manvsmachine’s works, Klingen is also currently using Cinema 4D, x-particles, HDRI-Light studio, Octane renders, and Photoshop in constant update with new digital art techniques.

Work

His works show Klingen’s extraordinary ability to use digital art techniques. To make this furthermore enjoyable, we’ve selected the most recent ones.

Moving Images

Thomas found a way to draw interest in his 2D prints. “Drawing on a computer can be quite brutal, so I’ve been thinking about how I can make it more beautiful,” he explains. 2017 saw him taking his first steps into the world of moving images with Posters for Peace for Sid Lee Collective: an open call for all creatives, designers, and illustrators to submit their visions of peace in a 24” x 36” poster. The short promotional animation, Thomas’ favorite project, features his sickly-sweet illustrations brought to life by animator David Leclerc, juxtaposed with disturbing real-world footage of war and destruction.

Despite the apparent changes, Thomas’ work retains the “little human normalities” that have always interested him. “I’ve zoomed out with my work, thinking more about aesthetics and trying to make something more fluid,” he explains. This approach enables him to incorporate more narrative into his work.

By taking advantage of symbology and focusing on projects over a more extended period, he has begun to create work that conveys feeling and atmosphere in a less literal manner.

About Karolina Pietrzyk

Graphic designer Karolina Pietrzyk is a 2015 graduate of the Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław (Graphic Design Faculty, MA). She has since then developed a strong practice designing posters for exhibitions, music, and design festivals. Her work enhances geometric and abstract shapes. Also, shades fade into linear forms to create a suggestive combination of scenes.

Pietrzyk’s layouts are a choice of styles that join hands, a sequence of forms to generate an unexpected consistency onto a surface.

Karolina’s value finds its best in this mission, creating an excellent set of tones and genres that communicate perfectly. Karolina Pietrzyk doesn’t seem to be bothered by the negative space. Quite the contrary she sees it as an evident and physical element: the negative space strongly cooperates with the success of her final vision. Karolina also shows superb usability of type, which she used in a visually arresting way without compromising on readability.

Her posters and layouts are compelling and strong, brave and bold.
Karolina Pietrzyk lives in Poland and is always looking for commissions or collaborations!
